Interesting read:

Why is it important to have these kinds of pop culture moment No. 1s? Well for one thing, it offers much-appreciated variety at the top of the charts -- after a succession of up-tempo, streaming-friendly hip-hop songs and mid-tempo, radio-friendly pop&B hybrids, it's fun to have an old-fashioned pop-rock power ballad at No. 1 for the first time in ages. It also adds to a chart's feeling of really defining its moment in time: The memories of A Star Is Born at the Oscars will remain such a vivid part of the cultural memory of early 2019 that it feels only right that the No. 1 song in the country should reflect that. And perhaps most importantly, a No. 1 like "Shallow" gets the different core institutions of our popular culture -- movie theaters, radio, TV, social media -- in conversation with one another, enriching all of them in the process and allowing the culture to grow communally.

I might be the minority here, but I don’t think she should release ARUTW (or really any other song) as the second single. I think she should ride the success and hype of Shallah into the lead single of LG6, which, let’s face it, is probably coming this year.

Here’s my rationale. Here me out:

If we do a cost/benefit comparison of the two situations (second single vs. no second single), the answer becomes clearer.

The benefit of releasing a second single is that it *probably* will have great momentum and could potentially milk the rest of the intangible hype of ASIB for all it’s worth. In other words, we have enough going right at the moment that a second single could do well. But here’s the thing. That’s all it will do - well. It may help extend sales of the soundtrack / DVD, but nothing significant.

The cost of this situation is much greater. First, we risk expending all of the momentum that Shallow / ASIB has built in terms of her overall popularity. Check Google Trends (search her name and look a the big picture timeline). Her google searches have skyrocketed recently. Unless ARUTW smashes (it won’t because radio won’t push it, the video is out already, and we have no more promotional moments that could actually make a big difference), it will produce a net reduction in her popularity.

——

The benefit of holding off is that we have literally tons of positive feedback and fame pouring in for Gaga right now, and if she rides that into the LG6 lead, and assuming it’s not a big week in music, she can easily score a top 10 debut, if not top 3. Think about it. The LG6 lead will more than likely be more radio friendly, she would have a radio deal, her streaming is being repaired right now, and her sales are usually quite dependable. If you throw in her general acclaim / popularity of 2019, it provides an excellent boost to make LG6 into a career defining album era.

The costs of this route are minimal. If she holds off, then ARUTW, Shallow, and ASIB will go recurrent naturally with no boost in sales at the end or extension of charting. Which....let’s face it...did we *need* that? All great soundtracks have the ONE song that defines the moment. Ours is “Shallow.” We did what we needed to do to solidify her slayage this era. Anything else is icing on the cake, and I, for one, am fine with holding off on the icing so that the next cake is MASSIVE.

ended ARUTW stans tbh. wanting to end the ASIB era on a flop? a joke... literally a joke

Shallow would be going for another week #1 in sweden and ARTUW would get a repeak if it weren't for all these melfest songs flooding the charts right now :madge:

If you only count international artists then spotify sweden would look like this right now:
#1 Shallow
#7 ARTUW
:ally:

oh wow totally forgot about Eurovision

Jesus. And to think it almost didn’t go #1 in the US. It would have been a similar case of Bad Romancinitis :air:

1. Havana - 19M

2. God’s Plan - 15.3M

3. Shape of You - 14.9M

4. Perfect - 13.5M

5. Girls Like You - 13.5M

6. Despacito - 11.8M

7. Be Apart - 10.9M

8. Something Just Like This - 10M

9. Friends - 9.6M

10. Psycho - 9.2M

saving them for special occasions is a downgrade. have you seen the Bad Romance/Monster/Speechless performance on Oprah? and literally every basic TV show at that time? it was so unique and different every time...  and everyone goes extra on their tours and halftimes... so yeah you’re not adding any favours by saying Gaga’s performing at the standard

I can't believe I just read someone comparing Bebe Rexha to Gaga. This must be the end of the world.

THIS.

I loved getting that number 1 because it reflects the cultural impact of Shallow. The charts nowadays seem to lag behind in truly reflecting pop culture so it made the win all so sweeter.
