NFL criticized for canceling Maroon 5 Super Bowl press conference amid protest controversy

Past performers including Justin Timberlake in 2018 and Lady Gaga in 2017 have addressed the press before the big show to give them a taste of what to expect and get some exposure before it all shakes out live. However, on Tuesday, the NFL quietly released a statement via Twitter explaining that this year will be different.

Many see the move as a way to avoid direct questions about the band’s involvement with the Halftime Show following a slew of controversy since 2016 with regards to how the organization handled a protest movement sparked by former player Colin Kaepernick. The 31-year-old began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016, gaining national attention and even a rebuke from President Trump. In 2017, the player became a free agent after opting out of his contract. He was not picked up by another team and is suing the NFL for allegedly colluding to keep him from playing.

Fans were quick to take to Twitter to criticize the NFL for its attempt to subtly cancel the press conference.

"NFL finds a way to avoid the conversation about the Cardi B and the others who refused to perform, shoves the Colin Kaepernick conversation to the side once again," one user wrote.

"Definitely nothing else that's happened recently that deserves a statement, you're doing great," a more sarcastic user noted.

"The NFL doesn't want Maroon 5 to be asked about Kaepernick."

"Wanna let the performance speak for itself"

Hmmmm let's see...

Maroon 5, Travis Scott, Big Boi, and Spongebob...

I think it's safe to say that whatever this performance will "speak" about is bound to be a sh*tshow

Sounds more like an assumption rather than a fact. Also because nobody even cares for these press conferences...

I hope they get "taken down".

Idk why more people aren't taking about how this pop band, mostly run by a white male was so eager to jump at this option with total disregard to the situation.

It seems tone deaf and honestly makes them look racist and part of the problem

I am 100% here to ENJOY watching this be the WORST Superbowl of all time, and for Adam Levine's career to implode.

At some point you have to own up to your actions. If maroon 5 decided to perform, and they are asked why. They should say it. Youre either a coward or a liar when you just ignore it and pretend like nothing happened. Like if you want to perform and don't care about the politics just say so. If you support Kapearnick but still want to perform, say so. If you don't support him, say so. You can't expect to perform at the NFL during these times and not be asked to speak on the subject. You knew it ahead of time. They should not be able to have it both ways.

This. Be honest about the situation. They are going to have to address this issue at some point. Either they don’t care, or they care but are putting professional interests and money over the cause. They look bad either way, but at least would gain a teeny but of respect through honesty. I personally don’t like Levine or Maroon 5 and I would hope that if this were Gaga being asked in 2019, then she would decline to perform.

And they’ll be criticized regardless. So they should’ve just address it with the press. And tell them what their true feelings are. It’s ok if they don’t support Kaepernick. Just be honest. Although, I think people will forget about this after Sunday. So whatever.

Are you referring to the NFL doing something with this because of the creator's passing?

If so, that's the only reason to watch :coffee: and I'm not even kidding
