Gaga Needed an Emotional Scene to Truly Win BEST ACTRESS

These are parts of her acting when I cringe. She had a great debut role but some of it, that and even the beginning bathroom scene, is weird and unnatural

Ally has a very angry personality. She has lived her whole life in frustration because of shattered dreams, a dead mother, and an alcoholic father.

Ever since from the start they show how impulsive she is, so Gaga’s reactions are fitting for her character.

Yes, the end is emotional, but it's only Gaga singing/performing. She has given us breakthrough performances time and time again. We know she is a singer and can deliver. We needed an ACT delivery.

Euhmmmm @nakedidea , basically this:

Two of those sence are pure acting scenes and not her singing

As everybody else has said, she has several scenes of explosive emotion. The rest of it are heavily implied, as a lot of the narrative centering is indeed around Jackson.

That said, the scene that really impressed me (and got to me!) the most was when her father was talking about how some artists, while truly talented, don't always make it to stardom. Those small shots of Ally feeling absolute dread and shame and sadness in the kitchen, before sucking it up, were really powerful

- Our first introduction to her when she screams after breaking up with her boyfriend

- When she's arguing with Jackson in the tub and screams at him

- When she's siting alone crying after he dies

- When she smashes his posters

I get what you mean though, some kind of wailing, screaming, blubbering, breakdown. But I think that's just not the character they wanted Ally to be portrayed as. She's strong, but when she's broken she's completely broken. As in number, blank, void. That's what I got from her after she smashed his posters and sat around alone in their house and cried. It wouldn't be in the character of Ally for her to wail and cry and be dramatic and lie on the floor blubbering. In fact it would've been less effective in the film than having her walk around the house alone and try to hold back her tears.

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

I am surprised most people think that great acting is screaming, breaking glass, crying sobbing etc... A lot of the reviews I read praised Gaga for little subtle details like facial expressions, close up scenes etc especially in the first part of the movie.... I think that was the strongest part of her performance... some shouting and crying doesn't really win you an award. Personally, I was much more invested in the Ally character in the first part, because Gaga portrayed the excitement and the naivety really well, and personally I think this is much more impressive than the "big" scenes.

OP, I get where you’re coming from. Although I do feel that she had a lot more emotional scenes than Bradley did. In context of the whole film, she really shined.

The scene where he stumbles onto the stage as she is accepting an award and makes a fool out of everything is so hard to watch but she hits all the beats of that moment. Then afterwards, it's just BAM BAM BAM emotion overload.

Not receiving certain awards isnt due to the lack or performance. Shes nominated. Its recognized. There were just a few AMAZING performances along with hers. That's all it is.

There is no failure. She is taken as a serious actress now. The film will make $500million globally after blu ray and dvd sales. The soundtrack is a smash.

Ya literally couldnt ask for anything bigger.

I think we needed to see her reaction to finding out.

That is such a delicate line that can go over the top or so melodramatic that it would hurt the entire thing. I think the choice was right to not show it. Thats too delicate a line.

Its more realistic the way she played it. Ya dont flail around like a soap opera actress when someone dies. Its beats...quiet moments. Her face showed all the feelings and the show had to go on too.

This isnt a television drama. This is a reflection of real life and the choices made were the way things are in real life.

I think what the OP is referring to is an emotional monologue where Gaga controls the scene. Think Nicole Kidman.

First, the film has plenty of "emotional" scenes. Second, actors and filmmakers are smart enough to know that shouting/crying are not necessarily great acting. If anything, those things are easy to accomplish. What Gaga does so beautifully is build a character that feels completely alive. That's not easy, and is worth rewarding.

In my opinion, no matter what she did she would NOT win in a category with Glenn this year. NO MATTER WHO was nominated they would not win because they would give it to Glenn nonetheless. It's just that type of "it's her time" kinda moment.

If anything, had Gaga given an extra Oscar-worthy scene in the movie then she'd move up to 2nd place at most, passing Olivia Colman or something.
