that's for the academy to judge and only their opinions matter as to who gets the oscar so technically discussing this makes no sense :trollga:

This is a discussion forum smh. You can do better than that.

To my taste, Olivia Coleman had an brilliant, subtle performance that really stands out as this year’s best. Gaga was good, but she had an okay script and okay director to go with, from which she couldn’t really fully shine and flesh out her skills. I think she would better deserve it another year with a stronger character/movie.

She deserves it so much but I feel like it's going to either Olivia Colman or Glenn Close.

My opinion:

No, she did not give the best performance of the year for a female. Of the movies I saw:

Glen Close, Coleman, Nicole Kidman, and that girl from "The Hate U Gave" were all better IMO.

Having said that, I would not have a problem with her winning. There have been plenty of times where Gaga lost to artists inferior to her. I mean just last year Gaga lost Grammys to people who did NOT have better work than her. There have also been plenty of people who have won Oscars or other awards despite not being the best. So if those people can win stuff, then why can't Gaga? She worked, studied her craft, did the best she could. I say give her the award.

When I watched ASIB, and she sang INLA at the end and gives that stare into the camera, I remember thinking if that’s not Oscar worthy I don’t know what is.

I agree, in a certain way. I agree that the scene was incredible, and I believe lots of people who believe she deserves the Oscar give it as an example. On the other hand, when she's singing INLA, we are actually witnessing her singing. That moment is a showcase of Gaga's work as a songwriter-singer for over ten years. It's emotional alright, but is it a great acting performance? It's more of an emotional singing performance I think, it's the one thing we were already expecting her to deliver in this movie.

For example, I find the Shallow performance a much better example of singing-acting crossover than INLA.

It's still acting though. Celine Dion is one of the best singers there are and has excellent stage presence too. If she had done that performance and then stared into the camera like that, would it work? No. She can't act.

I really don't know but tbh who cares ? It's her second acting gig and first movie and she's nominated for a ****ing OSCAR along Hollywood legends. If she wins I'll be freaking happy but can we celebrate what is already a huge achievement before thinking about her winning a damn oscar after her first movie ?

Mister Gaga

As someone who watched both ASIB and The Wife (i hope y'all commenting have done the same, because if not, it would be stupid), i think Glenn Close is superior. Much superior (and Olivia Colman for The Favorite too). This is Gaga's first acting role, guys. She still has such a long career ahead, a long way to go. Glenn is great in The Wife, she's simply above.

If we’re going with ACTING acting, like mastering the art form in its entirety, then no, but the Oscars don’t always care about that stuff. Gaga’s performance is wonderful especially for a debut, but beyond that, her character and the film have moved so many people, and for me that solidifies her performance even more. She should win based on all of it - a great, touching performance, an inspiring character arc and the fact that ASIB was talked about so highly during the festival circuit (not to mention ground-breaking musicianship). I don’t think she deserves Best Actress any less than the other nominees just because she hasn’t acted as long as they have.

It’s not Gaga’s first acting role though......and she’s built up with golden globes for AHS and she’s entered the other tier because she WAS good. Like......

And since when do only “established” actors win awards? There’s lots of “A Listers” that have been in TONS of films that still suck at the role.

she does. but not for this role. but then again, it's not like oscars mean anything these days, so who cares. not sure why you people are so achievement-hungry.

in the end, it all comes down to preference, but I personally wouldn't say she gave the best performance of the year, it's honestly not even my runner-up choice of best performance, but definitely top 5 quality

Toni Collette, to me, gave the most outstanding performance of the year, never have I been so invested in a performance since Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady

Haven't seen The Favorite yet. Even though Gaga was fantastic in the movie it's just simply nowhere near as amazing as Glenn's performance, sorry.
