Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Tuesday defended Malaysia's ban on Israeli athletes, comparing it to US President Donald Trump's plan to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.

"Every country has the right to accept or refuse entry of anybody," Mahathir Mohamad told a press conference in Vienna on Tuesday.

"You can see that in America now they are erecting a very high wall to prevent Mexicans from going to America," he said.

"We have the same idea, that people who are undesirable for our country will be kept out of our country," Mohamad added.

Last week Israel lashed the prime minister for the move, accusing the prime minister of "rabid anti-Semitism" after he said his country would not host any more sports events involving competitors from the Jewish state.

The Oxford Jewish Society, in a statement released before the Malaysian PM was set to speak, said:

“Prime Minister Mohamad is an open and unrepentant anti-Semite, accusing Jews of ‘Nazi cruelty’ and seeking to wipe out all Muslims, has said ‘Anti-Semitic’ is ‘an invented term to prevent criticizing Jews for doing wrong’, as well as indulging in Holocaust denial. Given an opportunity to reframe his comments on a recent edition of BBC’s ‘Hardtalk’, he instead chose to refer to Jews as ‘hook-nosed.’
