andreas85 394
"Message" of that song: under so-called "capitalism" self-centered and filthy rich people like Ariana Grande can buy lots of nice things. Thanks, but there's nothing new or suprising about that. All the corrupt dictators of the world also approve this kind of lifestyle. Seriously, I really don't think there's any actual message behind the song. I also don't care how popular it is because there's nothing new about the fact that atrocious songs can become incredibly popular. Only real problem with the song is just how terrible it is. Braindead lyrics, repetitive generic tune, gringe-inducing music video, and it sounds like 99 percent of all the equally terrible and forgettable modern pop songs. derpmonster 22,412
I feel like I could've appreciated this if it weren't simply a sample of My Favorite Things and then a spoken word chorus. Sometimes exaggerated shallow is fun like in the case of Cake Like Lady Gaga. We know Gaga isn't a person who would genuinely boast. It's just a cute indulgent while satirical (like The Fame) bop. Also for new people just coming to this thread, the reason people are arguing economics would make more sense if you saw the title before it was changed. This is exactly how I see 7 rings though Why can't you explain similar songs identically? This is clearly a song Ari wrote about her and her friends and about how, initially, spending money is a cure for your problems (which it obviously isn't and it's basically guaranteed that on the album she'll clarify that, as she did on Sweetener), in that sense it's exactly like something like Donatella I guess we can make excuses for Gaga but nobody else, huh? Please don't get defensive. I said part of the reason I don't like it is because it doesn't bring too much of songwriting in. The indulgent satire part, I can understand and that's how I read the song too but it would be better if Ariana clarified... Like a little bit. With Gaga it was pretty clear from her interviews and her social media that she was not the literal person in her songs. Ariana instead has been coming across as petty. And it especially feels that way because she's just using this relationship drama that was so popular to sell records. Again, I don't follow her much so I'm not the best person to say much about it. I'm open to learning about it. Also, about clarifying on the album... Donatella wasn't a lead or pre album single. Ariana instead has been coming across as petty. By titling her song as a reference to how she bought diamond rings for each of her friends? How is that petty? It's literally a song about how she spends money with her friends I still fail to see the egotistical rich bitch attitude everyone's complaining about. Her friends are in the title and it's an obvious reference to how she's just enjoying life with her friends now and chasing what she wants out of life rather than chasing a man (the obvious sequel to TUN, then) That's not like a subtext, that's obvious from the very lyrics (to me). And, again, I guarantee you one of the next songs (or one on the album) will be a more nuanced statement, this is her thing. We know she writes deep and meaningful lyrics now, that's one of the reasons the critics were so in love with Sweetener. She was able to play the sassy tween but also deliver an emotional and profound statement with some of the other songs. It's balanced. But the episodes inbetween aren't balanced and they shouldn't be Like Donatella and MJH, they represent a similar emotion that, yes, we can all relate to (who doesn't like to mindlessly spend money with friends I ask y'all) but one that's not necessarily the most truthful. This is pop music. We rarely listen to pop to meditate about life's problems, we want relief from them. Ari's giving us that relief, and she'll also give us something else if we take her seriously and listen to her album Cue Get Well Soon!
