Not to mention that many gay actors whine all days and nights about those roles going to straight people ☄️ Before there was love, there was silence 🌌
ryhanna 3,507
I still hate this attitude. Yes, I believe homophobia is a problem in Hollywood casting, and gay actors deserve recognition, roles, and to feel comfortable being themselves in the industry. But I also believe that boxing actors in to only playing roles according to their sexuality is ...backwards. So backwards. Put the blame on gay actors not getting roles on directors, casting directors and studio heads who don't believe gay actors can sell box office tickets, or don't give them the chance to tackle lead roles. Don't blame other actors for doing their jobs.
derpmonster 22,412
I don't think it's a huge issue but it's still better if they cast gay people for gay roles (because gay people are often turned down and they will undoubtedly portray a gay character more realistically - there's not one way to "act" gay and if we're seeing some more humanity some less stereotype in a casting, why not). Ok people (Americans) are waaaaay too sensitive nowadays so indeed you have to be careful with the choices u make as an artist before cancel culture gets a hold on u. However, acting is....acting...? It's only an illusion, that's why it's called "act"ing.. so yes a trans person knows more about how the whole transitioning process felt and how difficult it is etc than someone who's just straight, but... do u need to be a rapist to portray a rapist? Do u need to prove that you've killed 400 people to play Michael Meyers? Should I have been killed in the second world war to play in a movie about Auschwitz? My answer is no. As long as it's done with respect and as much involvement of the right people as possible, you dont need to be those things... after all, it's a movie and not a documentary. However, for those of you who have watched Pose: it really was one of the most emotional and captivating series I watched about that period in NYC. And knowing that the whole cast is trans, are poc,...it maybe does mean something, but it is still not necessary in my opinion. Well I think it's pretty telling that so many people *think* he's gay because of his acting portfolio. I mean, if people do still so strongly associate a person with their role (especially when it comes to sexual orientation) then there is a case to be made about his taking the role from a gay actor of which there are many. On a logical level, I agree with you to some extent, but if audiences continue to be unable to differentiate between an actor and a role in terms of sexuality then there is something worth reassessing there. No one sees a rapist or serial killer in an actor outside of the role. I don't see a queen of a planet or a senator or ballerina when I see Natalie Portman outside of her movies, but people *do* see Criss as gay which inadvertently puts him in a strange position being a representative of the community when he was not appointed to be. He's an ally, but I think he agrees that it isn't the same as having representation from a queer sibling. It's show business, it's a bigger anomaly that someone *isn't* gay at a certain point. You're right, though, it isn't required; after all, it's business. But this is more for him and others about a moral imperative to set the rules of the game so everyone can have an equal shot. He's got his money and made his name so now he wants to try using his clout and helping others get an in where he can. A very easy one is by helping lift up gay actors and the queer community in Hollywood. After all, they've been very supportive of him thus far. As a thespian myself, I'm so over this, "that role could have went to someone who was actually ______" It's called acting for a reason. It's amazing when someone can transform themselves into someone else, that's what makes it such an artform when done right. Flip the script tho, are you going to be mad every time a gay person plays someone straight? Or a trans person plays someone cis? Get over your sensitivities and realize what makes acting beautiful. Guest ARTPOPSlays
I don’t completely understand that. When your acting, your playing somebody different from you. So why should it be wrong for a straight man to play gay? Does that make it wrong for a Gay to play a straight?

That J 12,166
I think it's good for actors who are straight to play gay roles because they can get into what that feels like which gives them a sort of meaning to it all. It's like an education. I admire what he is saying but it's never offended me to see a str8 actor portray a gay character.
