For those saying "Their land, their rules", does that work for dictatorships or states that lawfully kill gay people, atheists etc.?

That’s not a fair comparison tho. They’re not as developed as we are and don’t have the information we have. They can’t be judged by the same system of morals.

No, because that example that you gave involves a modern society that know better, not some savages that don’t know any better.

I understand and I’m honestly on your side of leaving them alone - I’m just playing devils advocate and asking, when do we force modern ethics into a society? And hold people accountable by “modern standards.”

If they were a tribe who sacrificed children, should we allow them to do that because they have been untouched by modern society? (Again this is all just “what if” situations).

We should implement modern ethics to nations that are developed. Not some indigenous savages who don’t know any better.

If they were, like, killing and eating children, I would say the same thing: leave them alone. Of course, if a government decided to intervene and do something about it, I would probably swallow my unease about it because at least children will be saved. That’s kind of a gray area.

I’m not saying they should be invaded. Don’t put words in my mouth. I’m all in for leaving them alone unless they want to make first contact.

I only said that they need to be criticized for it and not celebrated like some do here. Cultural relativism is not the right way to do it.

And of course there is a difference in these scenarios, but the argument “it’s their land and their rules” can be applied there as well. I used it as an example for you to see that the “their rules their land” argument is flawed.

Killing is always wrong. Missionary as well, but two wrong don’t make one right.

I’m not saying we should celebrate that dude’s murder, but to criticize indigenous savages for doing what they think is best is kinda ridiculous. They literally don’t know any better lol

But to think that indigenous can’t be civilized or have manners is kinda problematic as well :rip:

I'm in two minds.  I agree, we can't hold them accountable because in their world, anything out of their ordinary is a threat, it's understandable why they kill other people.  To play devil's advocate though, where does one draw the line on that though?  Can we leave countries that kill members of the LGBT+ because we think they "don't know better?" People make the exact same argument against helping refugees claiming that they don't have the same morals as us etc.  People have used that argument to kill people for all of recorded history.

I believe unless they attempt to leave their island and attack, they should remain untouched.  For their benefit and for ours, it's interesting to see what could happen to a slice of the world without outside people interfering with them.

That’s why I said indigenous savages, not indigenous people. Two different groups of individuals. Don’t deflect lol

Killing isn’t wrong in self-defense, which is what they are doing. They were protecting their lives.

My bad, I over-read the savages. Apologies!

Those countries do know better tho. They have relationships with other countries, they access to all kinds of information, the internet, etc. They know being gay is not a disease, they know not everyone is obliged to follow a religion, they know free will is possible. These people literally don't know any better.

But what about citizens who are censored from information because of their governments? Are they allowed to do whatever is considered right under their leaders rule because they have a lack of information? Even if they do gain access to new information, their thought processes are under their original cultures and it’s hard to beat that.

I know it’s moving away from the topic at hand but I’m curious when we draw the line of right/wrong versus cultural differences and when we enforce cultural ethics into those differences.

He was delusional and broke the law however he had good intentions.  It is sad he lost his life over this decision.
