1. I wouldn't call it 'finished' since its literally her recording a voice memo singing over a beat playing on DJWS' phone, but late 2012

2. Probably early 2013 (January, since she talked about it then. This would be the mumble studio demo where its a melody with no verse lyrics)

3. Not sure what you mean by released, perhaps leaked, and I don't think we ever got a demo without 'placeholder' noises aka the melody for the verses

I should probably change my question. When was a demo that did not us gibberish in place of unfinished lyrics released?

theres one other mix with different vocals in the last chorus but still 99% exact same as the released

I have to apologize because I didn't even include the main change in the question that I planned on using because I forgot. :saladga:

I meant to say,  when was a demo that did not us gibberish in place of unfinished lyrics finished?

This is the earliest tweet that I could find about Applause. She definitely started it in 2012.

Yeah that’s it! Close enough to 2012 haha Based on the concept demo I think she took a lot of time with Appkause. Those lyrics don’t feel as spontaneous as some other tracks. They feel suuuuper premeditated.

Do you mean when the snippet leaked not long before it got released? It was a snippet of the demo's 2nd verse with actual lyrics if i recall correctly :emma:

So she must have worked on the lyrics to the track for months then. :wtfga::wtfga:

Lord Temptation

Her label made her butcher the songs including the lyrics.

From Aura we know that instead of “I killed my boyfriend” got changed to “I killed my former and...”

From Sexxx Dreams we know the bridge got changed completely, plus they made her add that whole unnecessary “You were in my” into the chorus.

I speculate they made her change some of the lines in Applause. It’s only a gut feeling but something tells me that the line “To crash the critic saying: Is it right or is it wrong?” was originally “To smash the critic saying: Is it right or is it wrong?” It would be a play on words as critics tend to use the term “it smashed” or “it was smashing” when something like a song or a movie performs well against their expectations.

Her acoustic performance on Sukkiri show a sadness in the song that is not reflected in the final studio version. When she looks straight into the camera when she sings the “A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E” still gives me chills.

I like Applause but I don’t love the final version. It feels missing something. Her live performances on the other hand are phenomonal.

Watch it and tell me what you think

Raccoon

I remember during the BTWBall in late 2012, when she used to sing Bloody Mary, she already mentioned some words regarding the concept of Applause. Some examples: "Say my name, I can't live without the fame" or "Scream for me, I live for your applause"

"The scars on my mind are on replay"

It’s funny, a couple of years ago we argued time and time again over this, what you just posted is what I was saying all along.  ARTPOP is a great album but it could have been better if some of those strong original ideas and concepts were fleshed out and not removed.

Glad to see you’ve seen the light though, hopefully we’ll get more demos over time and we can hear the excellence ARTPOP should’ve been :vegas:
