I don't get what's wrong with this tbh... surely her thinking black skin and features are desirable is a good and inoffensive thing? It's literally the complete opposite of "blackface" used in the past to mock black and criticise people.

How is it a double standard? The comparison was wrong in the first place. Lightening your skin is essentially the same as getting a tan. Neither effect your actual features. These IG models weren’t simply getting tans, they were adding on features to make themselves appear to be black.

It's not the fact that they're trying to look black that's itself offensive. It's the background. On the significance beyond looks:

Blackface has been historically used to make fun of black people and get white actors to play them. It's understandable why that would hurt people or be highly insensitive. You could say it's not a thing anymore today but that's not true. If you live in a place where racism is very negligible, great for you. Many parts of the world and America are still full of racism.

 

In the past, some light skinned black people used to try to pass as white to save themselves from persecution. People don't do that anymore. Bleaching hair is normal because any race can have blonde hair. Plus, in isolation, it would be okay. What would be odd is if a black person wore blonde hair, blue eyes, and somehow colored their whole skin very pale (it would take color, not just bleach to do that). Still, it wouldn't have the racist context that blackface does.

It's not a double standard. Tan is one thing, blackface is another. Do you see Beyoncé or others make their skin pale to the point where they look like white women? I don't think so.

They explained this before. Blonde hair isn't exclusive to white people.

Again, it's NOT problematic to have tan skin. What's a problem is blackface.

White women can use artificial tan, black women can do lightening. The problem is when a white woman is trying to pass as a black woman. It goes beyond changing just one feature and the DEGREE of tan is important.

I still think that some black people are trying to make themselves "less black" by getting white features. Blond hair is an example. Maybe there are some blond black but those are definitely exceptions, not the norm. It is rejecting a natural racial feature to make yourself closer to another. Thats how I see it, I dont judge it.
