Red Dead Redemption 2 scores biggest opening weekend in history

The latest blockbuster video game just made entertainment history on its opening weekend, its publisher said Tuesday.

Rockstar Games' "Red Dead Redemption 2" skyrocketed to a $725 million worldwide retail consumer sales during its first three days. The studio's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, said in a release that the game had achieved "the single-biggest opening weekend in the history of entertainment."

The number eclipses even the highest opening weekend in box office history: Disney's "Avengers: Infinity War" grossed more than $640 million in its first weekend on the big screen, according to data from Box Office Mojo.

According to Take-Two, "Red Dead Redemption 2" is the "second-highest grossing entertainment launch of all time," falling behind another Rockstar release, "Grand Theft Auto V," which achieved over $1 billion in retail sell-through during its first three days after being released on a Tuesday (which is why it failed to clinch the opening weekend title).

Oh f*** no... Keep in mind that this company, now responsible for two biggest releases, one of which has been crowned the most profitable entertainment product ever, overworks its employees to a degree generally unheard of...

You've gotta wonder what happens to that money exactly, and why they can't outsource work and instead resort to treating their creators like slaves :madge:

For people in the game industry commercial success of RDR2 is VERY bitter-sweet...

According to employees at the company, those reports were greatly exaggerated, apparently the only people who worked that many hours were 3-4 writers over a period of a week. Still unacceptable, but it’s not a problem throughout the whole company.

And they always have the option to walk out anyway :vegas: being part of the GTA/RDR crew would land them a job at literally any other video game dev. company :vegas:

I thought the game made $725 mil in copies...I'm like how is that possible??? I'm actually confused, how does a video game make that much money. Buying extras/items/pay to play content?

There can be 99 bottoms in the area but all it takes is 1 top to believe in you.

A game costing about 60$, that would be about 12 million copies worldwide in three days. For a game that is that popular it's not really surprising.

The video game industry is the most profitable entertainment industry by far. GTA V has made more than the top two grossing films of all time combined, its just an often overlooked industry.

Except I've heard a lot of artists (including ones working at Rockstar) talk and the grind is very much an expected part of your job when you join a large company that can get away with such a treatment because of its size... and staff can be very manipulative in their attempts to force you to work longer hours... Perhaps not every single person had to work 100 hours a week, but when you sing up, you're pretty much expected to give up your weekends at some point... It's unethical, unhealthy, and actually lead to a few suicides in the industry that were linked to overbearing working conditions, since such conditions make it very difficult to have any kind of a social life, or just one outside of the company you work at...

First of all no it wouldn't - it would be either your portfolio, or more likely your contacts. Second of all, coming from an illustrator, it hurts that so many people have such a dismissive attitude towards especially artists in the gaming industry... 'Oh, but making art is fun, who cares if you work unpaid overtime'...

One of the major problems a lot of people overlook is the fact artists don't have a union, and times and times again it hurt a lot of people in gaming and VFX industry... The state of the industry as it is right now ensures a lot artists have to put in double the effort for scraps, that employers are allowed to dictate how extreme those conditions get, meanwhile the products artists make keep breaking gross records...

And name is not an excuse - Rockstar can afford to outsource work if the deadline is pressing hard - if anything, it's more reprehensible that a big company with plenty of funds creates such an unhealthy working environment for its employees...

Remember the scandal with Amazon mistreating its employees? Imagine if I said 'but they don't have to work there, and working at an Amazon warehouse will land you a job at literally any other warehouse' - do you seriously think that's an acceptable point of view?

For anyone here that owns it: Is it worth getting? I've read reviews saying that it's realistic to a fault.

I just got it yesterday, I would 100% recommend it. There are a lot of very realistic elements such as needing to maintain your weight and cleanliness, as well as longer animations than you would expect from most games, however I don’t think these detract too much from the game as it’s intended to be a slow burner, rather than just GTA in the Wild West.

If you’re into more fast paced games than I would suggest doing a bit more research to see if it’s for you, but otherwise go for it. It’s hands down the most impressive game ever made.
