Romania vote to ban same-sex marriage has FAILED due to low turnout

A referendum to change Romania’s constitution to stop same-sex couples from securing the right to marry has failed after it did not attract enough voters to validate the result. 

The two-day vote aimed to change the constitution to define marriage strictly as between a man and a woman. 

The topic of the referendum has polarized and distracted the society from the agenda of the government: undermining the rule of law, the justice system, the anti-corruption department, use of excessive force against protesters (see the huge protests that took place on August 10th) and so on. So yeah, the people are not buying it.

Yesterday was a historic day for Romania as this hate-filled referendum voids because of a historical low presence. The whole country boycotted the referendum, with only 20% of the people voting during the 2 days.

The government even modified the referendum laws 2 weeks before this was held, in order to make sure it was going to pass, and even to encourage frauds and multiple-votes. The changes that were made are:

- 2 days vote instead of the traditional 1 day

- no more security cameras at the polling stations

- no more anti-fraud tablet at the polling stations

- the possibility to vote outside your city, on special lists (that can't be monitorized)

- reduced the turnout needed to validate the referendum from 50% of the population to 30% of the population

I was one of the 13,000 delegates sent by the only political party who voted against holding this referendum and positioned itself clear against limiting LGBT rights and, to be honest, we were the only ones who prevented mass-frauds from happening.

Even tho, the whole country sent a powerful message to the corrupted political class: we want to live in a progressist, European country.

I wonder if the EU would be able to somehow intervene, in case Romania actually went through with this?

Our Prime Minister was audiated in the European Parliament after on 10th of August they used violence and force on peaceful protesters in Bucharest (100.000 people got beaten by riot police, got tear gas in their face and were actually hit using a water cannon). While she was being audiated, they told her to not campaign for the referendum in any way or influence the vote and some of the europeans even told her to stop the referendum. But the government she rules didn't listen to that and even modified the laws in order to encourage frauds, multiple votes etc. Still, so many Romanians boycotted the referendum, it was impossible to fake 6 million votes (the votes needed to pass that referendum).

Also, Europeans even sent her a letter, telling her to not back on LGBT rights.

Now I think we're taking steps towards civil partnership for LGBT people and others.

Anyway, there is no legal and constitutional way to ever back on LGBT rights again, after 80% of the Romanians rejected this hate referendum. From now on, the only things they can do about LGBT  is to take steps forward.

The thing is, we, the romanians, sent a strong message to our corrupted political class, to the f*kin church, to the world. Romania, as an East European country, wants to live in a progressists, European country where everybody has equal rights and the corrupted socialist party and the church lost their credibility among people.

I really can't buy the fact that this country is happy for LGBT people. This country has been so full on hate on them. Even if I'm not from LGBT, I'll be so happy for them and not just this but the country will make a big step forward

Also, people realised that corruption and the church messing with the legislative and the executive ain't no fun, so the church lost it's credibility.

Trust me, people really do not hate LGBT people, mostly because they don't care about them, but didn't want to take part in a referendum against their rights and liberty.

No. Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria prohibid same sex marriages in their Constitutions.
