I know that you negotiate once you get into office. The difference is, with a leftist in office, the Overton window shifts. The left would be talking about free college as opposed to work-study credits, marijuana legalization instead of simply moving the drug to a different scheduling class. When you ask for a loaf of bread, you get half. When you ask for a 1/4th of one, you get crumbs, like what the dems have gotten for decades. Edit: look, I don't have time to sit here going back and forth on this all day. my point was the the people who were trying to work for something better than the status quo weren't the ones who lost Hillary the election and got Trump elected. The Democratic party that pushed for an unelectable candidate with horrible favorables and a terrible record did. The end. That's it.

The Democrats did an amazing job uniting the right. Girl. There have been exactly zero major shifts in Senate races based off of the Kavanaugh controversy so far. Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, you should know that the vast majority of polls have publishing delays of one to several weeks, which would not show the full effect of the confirmation proceedings on Senate races. If you’re talking about Heitkamp, she’s been largely thought of as DOA for a long time now, and Bredesen was never anything more than a longshot in TN. And in terms of general enthusiasm, we’re going to have to wait at least a week or two to be able to judge whether Kavanaugh’s successful confirmation will be thought of as a win that will send the GOP to the polls to “keep winning”, or whether GOP voters will rest on their laurels. If we look at the special elections from 2017 and 2018, there’s a strong trend of resting on laurels. But we’ll have to wait to see. I'm talkin' 'bout forever, baby. His major accomplishment was a watered down version of a right-wing healthcare plan (originally Romney-care) that mandated that people purchase healthcare from a private insurer instead of instituting a public option or, god forbid, a universal healthcare system, when he had a supermajority in the house and the senate. What else did he do? extrajudicial killings in the middle east? Expanded our presence there from two countries to seven? We got the Lilly Ledbetter act early on. We required private health insurers to cover those with pre-existing conditions. The supreme court legalized gay marriage, which was great, but any liberal president would've nominated a liberal justice and got that result, and the case was pushed to the supreme court by queer activists. All of those things were good. But a significant shift to the left? Absolutely not. Look at what happened in the UK. The Labour party embraced socialism, embraced a leftist platform, and turnout was historic. They destroyed the Tories' lead and almost took over the entire government in one fell swoop. We can do that in the US. Polling consistently shows support for leftist policies. We just have to give the public (including non-voters, who are disproportionately POC, disproportionately poor or working class, and disproportionately queer, all oppressed minorities because the Democratic party establishment has actively contributed to their oppression over the past three decades and they're disaffected with the entire process. many of them also don't vote because they literally can't get off of work because election day isn't a holiday) something to vote for and they'll vote for us. with a leftist government, we can get more done than we think if we actually get politicians in office who want to get it all done, if we truly crush the republican party into submission with a majority. It's true. Look: If you're really far left, then we likely agree on more than we disagree on. I wasn't trying to initiate an extended fight. I just don't think it's constructive to go after vulnerable people, like voters. We have to focus on people in positions of power. That's it.

I just don't think it's constructive to go after vulnerable people like voters. We have to focus on people in positions of power. That's it. spoiler bc long: Spoiler i am far left, especially socially. and the country did move significantly to the left under obama, whether by his direct actions or not. i tend to believe that he did help a great deal in that regard. maybe it just doesn't seem like it to you because the country was so far to the right before. and i know people grumble about romney care, but i can guarantee you that a single payer plan would never ever have passed at the time. never. i don't know if you realize, but the democratic party has shifted tremendously in its views in the last 4 or 5 years, and its shifted to the left. at that point in time, even when obama had the most political capital and had to push through a healthcare bill, there's no way on god's green earth a single payer plan would have passed. and then you have to consider the practicality of a single payer plan. liberals now say that it's unrealistic and that the numbers don't make sense. do you really think that if liberals are grumbling about it now that 8 years ago it would have been able to pass, when the ideology was much more center comparatively? in terms of the military, perhaps this is where we differ the most, because i think an american presence in syria for example was important. ISIS was running rampant there and growing like a weed, so US intervention there (though it's important to note boots on the ground numbers were relatively small) to stop ISIS in my view was necessary. letting it get out of control and organized, perhaps getting their hands on chemical weapons or military grade weapons caches would have made the problem much, much worse. people forget that sometimes intervention is simply prudence. i'm reminded of WWII, when america didn't get involved in european affairs until germany had lost its mind and was almost unstoppable. maybe an earlier intervention would have prevented the war altogether, who knows, or at least shortened it. that being said, toppling gaddafi in libya was probably a bad move, even if it was a concerted effort (i believe) by the UN and not necessarily the USA alone. i will also mention that obama did bring US troops out from Iraq (at the behest of the people, it was a campaign promise), and things deteriorated quickly there, leading to the flourishing of ISIS in the country that eventually spilled into syria after the arab spring, and then the US had to put troops back in Iraq and also put troops in syria. so there, who's fault is that? obama for keeping a campaign promise, or the people who would have held it against him, even if it would have been better to keep things under control with US troops longer? i will also add that while i don't like these extra judicial killings (it is a gray area), i doubt any president would stop doing them no matter what they say if the terrorist threat still loomed. it's either: 1. stop drone strikes and then send in american troops, which The People don't want. or 2. stop drone strikes and send in no american troops, in which case terrorism could thrive and probably would thrive unless some other country like china or russia took the reins, which the US wouldn't really like because it is in american interests to stave off the power accumulation of these countries. what is the realistic alternative is the question i would ask people. in terms of how obama brought the country to the left the most, aside from gay marriage and social stuff, is on the international field. obama encouraged collaboration (like with the UN in libya and syria), he encouraged strengthening alliances like NATO, the EU, and so on. and contrary to popular believe, obama wasn't very war hungry like you make it seem. he was often criticized for being a weak president militarily and not showing enough strength, so there's that. i mean he could have just brought everybody home i guess and not done anything with the military, but would that really have been the best thing to do for americans and for people abroad? and finally in terms of liberals contributing to the oppression of the working class, idk where you're getting that from. i am of the working class and from my perspective, it's republicans who have worked very hard to suppress the working class and it has been liberals who have fought to bring them up. the liberal government has helped me by giving me money to go to college, helping me pay for my expenses and books, in my liberal state i know people who are helped a lot by foodstamps, housing subsidies, and other kinds of aid. i mean sure liberals could do more but when you have such an extremist right wing party, it is very difficult. and the working class isn't disaffected with the political process so much because of what liberals are doing. it's more so because of what republicans are doing. liberals generally help more than they hurt the poor. oh and one more thing: i disagree with the fact that the voter is off limits in terms of criticism. half of the terrible things happening is because people voted for it, and they voted for it because they have no idea what they're doing half the time. why do you think kavanaugh got confirmed today? it's because people who vote to keep those senators in power WANT him confirmed. they VOTE for these senators, the rich, middle class, and poor alike. and why? it's because they don't. know. what. they're. doing. and this isn't a conservative thing. it's a left right and middle thing. that's why donald trump won when you get to the heart of it. you can say people are disaffected, they're this, they're that, when the fact is, if people simply used their common sense, exercised the best protest power they have in their arsenal--the vote--women's rights wouldn't be now in jeopardy, the drip drip drip anti-lgbt agenda wouldn't exist, climate change denial wouldn't be the prevailing opinion of the government, the. list. goes. on. The People did this and that's really at the root of it. i will admit that it's complicated because money can obfuscate the truth, but that wouldn't work if they paid attention to the news or read the paper on a regular basis.
