Lol this is literally more boring than I could ever have imagined...

No one was expecting crazy fashion, we were just expecting high quality glamour. Literally nothing about this is good the blandest possible outfits, blank/uninteresting sets, no accessories, minimal makeup, boring hair. No concept or message, and afaik it doesn't support anything (eg. First black photographer shooting Vogue cover for Beyoncé).

Probably stems from people always wanting to strip her down and "reveal" her. But, she is selling a movie here, and has to appeal to larger audiences. Stilt shoes and fur and glamour isn't really want the gp respond to.

Why would anyone still think Gaga is stupid enough to deliberately "copy" Madonna at this point in her career? She has tons of creative people at her disposal, and she knows everything she does will be compared to decades worth of Madonna material. And if she were to specifically reference Madonna, it wouldn't be for a random glamorshot of her lying in the grass.

I agree the article is a good read. And I also agree that this "stripped down authentic" bull**** is what the GP responds to best (for reasons I just can't understand) - but her doing this completely contradicts what she says in the interview.

“I just remember feeling so irritated at the thought that I had to conform to being ‘normal,’ or less of whatever I was already born as. And so I took such radical enjoyment in expressing who I am in the most grandiose of ways.” She laughs. “It was sort of like a very polite ‘**** off.’ It was never about looking perfect—it was always about just being myself. And I think that’s what it’s always been about for my fans, too. It was a form of protection, and a secret—like a wink from afar. I’m a monster, and you’re a monster too.”

... if you hate the idea of conforming, why are you conforming 100% to all the people saying "let's see the "real" Gaga under the clothes and makeup"?

 

But as I said, I do agree that "simple classy elegant normal traditional" is the best publicity move right now. But it is very much possible and easy to acheive this image wihout being so bland and visually unappealing.

The dress is Brandon Maxwell, a close friend of hers and she decided to wear his design on the cover of Vogue. It’s not conforming, she holds some people very dear to her and she’s always helping others. She’s been doing this her entire career. 

You guys have this habit of putting words in her mouth or creating stories in your head of what she is supposed to be. 

She’s been serving amazing looks lately, some that are even her “old style” and suddenly a classy look that’s being praised to the high heavens by most people (look at the comments on Sarah’s post, or Vogue, or Inez insta) and practically everyone is swooning meanwhile her “fans” are having meltdowns.

But... she has conformed? Are you trying to tell me that she didn't tone down her style as a direct response to the ARTPOP backlash, in an attempt to appeal more to the GP?

And I didn't put any words in her mouth, I provided a direct quote from her Vogue interview.

I agree she has been serving some great looks. As I said, "traditional and inoffensive" looks can be beautiful and visually appealing. The looks in this Vogue photoshoot, however, are not

I think most of this fan base was drawn to Gaga because she challenged the status quo of what it meant to be a pop star. As an actress she seems to have abandoned that fearless spirit. Perhaps she has more to lose now.
