Legendary Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin took a swipe at the upcoming movie “First Man” late Sunday for its director’s decision not to show the planting of the American flag on the moon during the historic 1969 mission.

Aldrin, 88, who was the second man to step on the moon, behind crewmate Neil Armstrong, posted historical photos of the flag-planting and added the hashtag “Proud to be an American.

In previous posts Saturday, Aldrin shared photos of himself wearing a T-shirt with the tagline “Buzz Aldrin, Future Martian” that shows an astronaut planting the American flag on the Red Planet.

But despite the controversy, Gosling, a native of Canada, defended the decision not to portray the flag-planting scene, saying at the Venice Film Festival that the decision was deliberate because the moon landing “transcended countries and borders.”

Many mocked and criticized Gosling’s decision, with US Sen. Marco Rubio decrying it as “total lunacy” and ignoring historical reality.

“The American people paid for that mission, on rockets built by Americans, with American technology & carrying American astronauts. It wasn’t a UN mission,” Rubio tweeted.:gum:

But on Friday, Rick and Mark Armstrong, sons of the late astronaut, along with biographer James R. Hansen, released a statement pushing back against criticism and saying director Damien Chazelle’s film is “quite the opposite” of being “anti-American."

Btw,  I don't think this will be the winner of Best Picture though it is now on top of the prediction for BP. :giggle:

In my opinion, "Roma" & "Blackkklansman" have bigger chance to win.

I was in the US for over 3 weeks last August and it was so funny on where you guys plant a flag. Like lol, you would never see anyone outside the US planting flags on every department stores, front lawns, hotels, even on every subway vehicle etc. It's funny since you guys think that means ur proud but in fact, it looks ridiculous as f and it devalues what your flag stands for.

From what weve heard and seen I think Blackkklansman might be the best choice as of now.

Yeah, after TIFF and especially Oscar promo everything will be clearer but I can see BlacKKKlansman being the frontrunner and First Man kind of pulling a The Martian

I mean I think he sort of has a small point. If it happened that way then why not showcase it the way it happened with the planting of the US flag? 78E8AA26-E2AD-41DD-A2F6-DE15F0023566.thu

That being said is it really worth all this drama? Americans can be so sensitive when it comes to patriotism at times and it is funny honestly (some americans of course not all).

no offense but it kinda sounds like the act of planting the us flag is like saying ‘this is now a product of america and belongs to US ONLY!’ and just makes america look selfish and narcissistic af

i agree with what gosling said that this moon landing transcended countries and borders because it WAS the FIRST successful moon landing EVER for the entire world, it just so happens that the US was the one conducting it

and as for the less than stellar reviews, i feel like critics just weren’t ready for damien chazelle to do anything unrelated to music in film lmao, with that said though, to be honest, this movie doesn’t look appealing to me but i’m sure it’s not a BAD movie, it’s just something out of damien chazelle’s comfort zone

Reportedly the flag is in the movie. They just don't emphasize the planting of the flag and focus more on the characters feelings in those moments.

It is silly to go nuts over the flag. It is a symbol of America, but does not need to be shoved in peoples faces (or other places)

Rubio just comes across as a jerk here. The film obviously focuses more on the moon landing as well as unity and teamwork, which is what the US should stand for
