So I've been watching the other versions of A Star Is Born and they are very interesting and seem different.  It seems like they focus on the love story more, where as I feel like Gaga is trying to make her version more about what the music industry was like for her.  Changing her hair, talk about her looks / nose, feeling talented but ugly.  It's very interesting that Gaga gets to create yet another piece of work about Fame but this time it directly references her experience with it.  I think this film is gonna really show us what her life has been like the last 10 years in a way.

Wasn't it only one review? Most reviews praised Gaga though.

Well only one review went into actual detail about it, but there are some parts in every review that sort of lean toward it. That's the general sense I got anyway? I can't remember which specific ones, but even in overall positive reviews, there was a line or two about how Ally could've had more depth to her character if she had gone full Lady Gaga? Like more emphasis was on Jackson and Ally just kind of seemed average...like it didn't really show how famous she got. I get what they're saying but I'm glad she doesn't go full Gaga because then the GP would be like...she's just acting as herself. IDK.

“A remake, yet again”

It seems a number of critics are stuck on the fact that its a remake, which is entirely unfair and seems to be influencing reviews :saladga:

a remake after 40 years yet they are probably ok with the 10th remake of spiderman in 10 years.

Also his criticism of Gaga seeming to be looking for attention by dressing down is unfair too, because we just know if she was in a movie where she was all high fashion these critics would drag her for being safe :saladga:

obviously a guy that is incapable of "forgetting" Gaga's outsized real-life and thinking of her as an actress.   This is always the risk when casting a superstar like Gaga for this kind of thing but the fact that the vast majority of critics seemed to have no trouble "losing" Gaga and embracing Ally is a testement to her acting ability.

Who would have thought that the reviews would be so unanimously positive, that a negative review would come as a surprise?

There’s 2 negative reviews as of now...both 2/5 stars and both only count for RT

Correct, and those are the outliers at the moment. The vast majority have been very positive, which was a pleasant surprise.

Another positive review from Sight and Sound, counts for RT

“The lead performances are both extremely solid. Gaga subtly conveys Ally’s gradual growth in poise and confidence, and is as convincing as a down-on-her-luck wage slave as she is as a pop diva.”

“The film delivers the goods – in particular, The Shallows, the rousing power ballad that serves as Ally’s starmaker, is as strong as anything on Gaga’s stadium rock-tinged sophomore album Born this Way”:vegas::vegas:

Ok you need to show me those reviews because I only remember one review saying that. I think it was IndieWire if I'm not mistaken, other than that, most reviews really praised Gaga's performance.

Did anyone catch that deleted Seth Rogen tweet? It was only up for like 20 minutes: https://twitter.com/Sethrogen/status/1036994120349184000?ref_src=twsrc^tfw

Indiewire said: 'Lady Gaga makes her film debut in #AStarIsBorn and critics are raving about her work: “Believe the pre-premiere hype: Lady Gaga is nothing short of extraordinary."'

Seth responded with: 'By film debut, you mean like the third movie she’s in?'

Not sure why he deleted it, he wasn't getting spammed by Gaga stans and what he said wasn't particularly negative. :oprah:

Maybe because he realized that this is her debut as a lead.

why even say that though ugh. rose byrne's (they've worked together multiple times) husband hates gaga and has shaded her lots of times esp after the Golden Globe win. pretty sure they've talked crap about her among themselves. isnt this dude the same guy who supported james franco even after multiple sexual assault allegations? begone ugly

Inevitably there will be a hate-train towards Gaga because she is this successful-enigmatic-triple-threat figure. My best advice is to take any negativity with a pinch of salt, the film and Gaga's performance are already getting major critical acclaim.

Note: Yes these reviews are important to a certain extent but judge the film for yourselves.

Enjoy this era - we're in for a special ride! X

Why RT does not update? Maybe they are waiting for the TFF?

The second negative review I read about here, is the second one from The Times? Are they going to include it on the site as well?

(Hope it's okay I'm using this as a catch all ASIB thread lol)

Looks like Natalie Portman is coming y'all. Vox Lux just opened with 92 (with 7 reviews) on metacritic.

Sia also wrote songs for it (Natalie is a Bowie/Gaga-esque pop star in the movie) so it looks like it's going to be a strong competitor Original Song as well.
