I'm not saying anyone needs to be dancing on his grave, but before everyone starts with the "I didn't agree with him politically but he was a decent man" platitudes without actually knowing anything about what he's done over the course of his career, I think it's important to remember that this guy has passionately fought for the US' invasion of numerous, numerous Middle Eastern nations that we subsequently destroyed, leaving millions of innocent people dead in our wake (he once joked, in response to a redneck's question about what the US was going to do about "these people" in the Middle East, that we had to "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"), has helped facilitate the deportation of millions of Mexican immigrants trying to build a better life for themselves, and was more of a war criminal than a "war hero." He was shot down and captured while attempting to bomb a civilian lightbulb factory in Vietnam, intentionally trying to murder civilians (which is, according to international law and basic codes of human decency, a war crime). And that's just the tip of the iceberg with this guy. It would take days to detail all of the ways in which he's taken advantage of and further subjugated oppressed peoples.

His entire political career was defined by blatant racism, imperialistic international bloodshed, and the systematic oppression of POC, queer people, and the poor and working class in this country. The fact that he once told a woman that President Obama wasn't actually a Muslim doesn't erase that history.

Start another thread and bash him then. This one should be sentiments or condolences.

I'm not "bashing" McCain. I'm recounting his actual political record. No one on this site, especially anyone who is queer or a POC, should be praising a man who spent his life trying to keep all of us subjugated.

His last stance was standing up against Donald Trump and his intolerance and hatred.

A Republican who cared about Climate Change and respected individual freedom like Gay Marriage. Will miss him from the Senate, may he rest in peace. I truly feel bad for Meghan, wish her the best!

This video just represents what is awesome about John:

He purposely, actively facilitated exactly that sort of systematic oppression of the exact same people that Trump has attacked over the course of his career. He just did it "politely," and "professionally," in a way the US press deems acceptable. Denouncing Trump's "rhetoric" means next to nothing. His actions speak louder than his words.

It's also important to point out that he voted with Trump's agenda 83% of the time while in office under him. He didn't "stand up" to him. He worked with him, while occasionally scolding him for his "tone."

If anyone is expecting Republicans to not vote yes on a Republican agenda, because of Trump, it's delusional. Don't forget that he single-handidly saved Obamacare. I didn't agree with him politically,  but let's be respectful.

During the biggest election in 2008, John McCain defended Obama by saying he is a good guy when a woman said a racist comment to him. Can you imagine some other politican doing that today at a rally? John is a class act who cared about Climate Change and recently became a supporter of Gay rights. He is a good guy who has a great centrist legacy in the senate, may not agree with everything but I wish there were more John's in the Republican party.

This forever will be one of the best moment in US politics. Although I consider myself liberal and very much to the left, he was one of the 2 or 3 republicans who gave some hope in this crazy administration when he voted no on this.

My condonlences to his family.

You know this is just my opinion, right?

Listen, I’m not going to have a political argument in here over whether or not the man was a piece of crap or not. If you feel the need to continue, then drop into my DM’s and we can do it there.

We aren't. We're mourning the loss of a human life. We're mourning a cancer victim. We're mourning a soldier.

His death doesn't cleanse his transgressions and bigotry, but for f*ck's sake, we can act like we have dignity and respect for human life.

He did not "single-handedly" save the ACA. He was one of several votes. Nevertheless, he deserves credit for that. I didn't expect him to vote against a hateful Republican agenda because I know his record. I was responding to someone who claimed that he had "stood up" to Trump, which wasn't true in any substantive way.

We do not owe an oppressor respect. Never.

My jaw dropped. I will never forget this. McCain had integrity and didn’t just tow the party line. He worked very hard to come to agreements with both sides of the aisle. I am liberal, but I can respect that about him.
