RadioIsOurs 13,873
You know it's true. Declining doesn't mean it's terrible, it just means there has been a drop in quality, which is a very normal thing. However, I feel like nobody major in pop music rn are going up the ladder... Most recent albums from some of my favs like Sweetener, Reputation and even Joanne are still albums that i can absolutely bop to, but you can't deny that none of these are the artists's best works, and as some may even say, a step down from their previous releases in terms of musicality. It's like everyone is just following the overall decline of pop music as a whole in general, and it's sad. I wonder if it has to with how some of these artists are kinda obliged to follow certain music trends, and it just so happen that the most recent trends turn out to be shitty? aaron l 11,999
I think the 3 albums you mentioned are perfect examples of artists doing the music they want/wanted to do though. Music not the bling at it's finest and I was/am here for it.
SpeechIess 1,060
Well, Joanne really wasn't following a "trend". And neither was Sw**tner. It just sounded awful. Reputation is still a solid pop album that sold extremely well given the climate, along with Joanne. We're just in a time period where pop music is dominant on the charts and airwaves as much as it used to be. I think Joanne, in general, is one of Gaga's best albums, lyrically and vocally. You can't have your cake and eat it. I can see your point about trends but they're usually stuck onto newer artists which are currently extremely popular, no matter how bland and forgettable they may seem, (Dua Lipa, etc.). ryanripley 86,575
well with older acts, as time goes on and more albums come out, the chances of it being their BEST work kinda gets slimmer with these new acts who only have one album out like dua lipa, it's not gunna be as hard for her to out-do her debut and then you have to factor in personal tastes too for me, Joanne is better than TF, ARTPOP and BTW but for plenty of other fans its at the bottom of their lists even though they like it and right now, pop music consists of hip hop and trap so many pop acts from before will try to stay relevant and implement what ever is charting rn so if you hate trap (aka me), you'll have a hard time enjoying pop music today https://goo.gl/xMgMvJ

bloody g 31,746
Pop is a complex subject, not only that but in the current musical environment it's not shining as much as it used to and it's starting become uninteresting even for some of us I hope the hip hop trend will soon be over... 『𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝』
Nino 12
Sweetener is by far Ariana's best album Joanne and Reputation were exercises in masterful songwriting. It would have been a lot easier to write another ARTPOP or Red, that's artistic growth, not decline

Lana Del Gay 853
The three albums listed weren't following trends, just weren't the most popular albums from the artists. Following trends is more like the new music you hear all the time that sounds recycled and unimaginative. You can recognise the trend when you hear it and it's not good. Lucas 26,668
True... I'm okay if they do the music they want though. But it feels like no one it trying hard to do something incredible anymore.

Trends in my definition can be as simple as going with a more muted aesthetic, having simpler chord progressions, using trap-style instrumentals, or maybe even avoiding previous trends. Anything that makes their work more in line with today's zeitgeist. And while it's definitely easy to see why artists would want to follow current trends to avoid being outdated, that doesn't mean it will elevate the quality of their music. yourstruly 145
Pop music used to be EPIC, but obviously it can't last forever, we're in a more underwhelming period but i guess it's what people need after years and years of the intense pop divas reign In any case I think Gaga will have more fun with this next era and us little monsters will simply eat it up
