Just because my rights are protected where I live doesnt mean someone will kill me if they knew. That’s if we are discussing equal rights like marriage and adoption. But we are talking about decriminalization of homosexuality. We can’t come out in the ME if the law puts us in jail with rapists and killers. If it becomes legal, people will start to come out. People here in Cairo still don’t believe that there are LGBT and that it is a Western propaganda thing.

I am from Morocco and homosexuality is very far from being legalized there. What is changing and what makes me a little bit at ease with how shitty things are in the countries of the third world, is that the Western world is finally starting to care about us, women and LGBTQ people of the other side of the world. I think this is one the ways that things can change, due to globalization and the four corners of the world becoming closely connected. I hope we stay relevant enough for us to be put on a map as a community that exists and that needs their rights approved. This makes me very sad though, because while in other countries "Love Is Winning", in other countries you can't even be gay withour fearing imprisonment, violence or death. I felt this in my bones hun, very well said
blueberryx 30
What people don't necessarily realize is that homosexuality is not understood to be a part of one's identity and all that entails; HOMOSEXUAL ACTS on the other hand is more characteristic of the concept. For instance, you can't technically be prosecuted for being gay, but you can be for engaging in homosexual acts with someone of the same sex, especially in cases where you are the one performing what they consider to be the 'woman's' role. Some people even consider it a sin in the same way they do drinking alcohol: as a temptation, an indulgence, to resist. I can't speak for all countries but I'm from Kuwait, the law is based on Shari'a (muslim law) where in order for there to be legal consequences to begin with, the act(s) in question need to be witnessed by no less than 4 individuals attesting to what they observed, I can't remember if footage or some other form of proof is required. The truth of the matter is that it is rare for people to be facing homosexuality charges, however, they are punished in different, unacceptable and sometimes beyond worse ways. I'm one of about half a dozen from my generation or older to be openly gay and it's been difficult. People talk **** which leads to a bad reputation which in my case has made it difficult to find work, you can never feel completely safe in public, threats range from mockery/comments from by others, to physical. I've had my rights violated at almost any encounter I've had dealing with authority figures, police, airport security, among others, who've gone so far as to **** with me (without going into detail, but you can perhaps imagine) in so many ways, in some cases, having singled me out in the crowd and detained me for 'fun.' So some muslim countries are eons away from understanding, let alone decriminalizing homosexuality.

They still don’t believe it exists in the ME so why would they search and try to understand it? We need people to start coming out here.

I was just wondering how you came out in Kuwait, Wont the authorities sentence you to death or something? How does it feel like? I slowly began telling one friend after the other asking them to keep it to themselves and eventually told enough that I felt it wasn't fair to my family. I mean, I wouldn't want my mom dad or siblings entering a room and have someone whisper into another's ear, 'his son'a a fag and he doesn't even know it' or any other comment for that matter. More than that it was for me that I told them, and once I did it was something I wouldn't deny. If someone asked I'd tell the truth. It took about 2 days for the entire country to find out. As I said in Kuwait you can't be prosecuted for being gay, you can be for engaging in homosexual behavior.
