What is a "ballad" ?

I’m gonna post some ballads here so you can understand what a ballad is

A ballad is a very old music form and the term has since medieval days designated a popular strophic kind of song

The ballad as we know shaped its form in 19th century. 

Theres many popular melodies passed orally of ballads, it usually has a refrain. It would have couplets with refrain.

Its been associated with the love song. Usually songs that are melodic and in 4/4 or at times 3/6 are ballads.

Most country and folk songs come from ballads. Popular irish tunes for ex as well.

Lucky is an exception though. The overuse of autotune actually makes really powerful in a way. Its unconventionally emotional. Especially the ending. A post modernist ballad.

That is a matter of preference really...I'm more into r&b and more natural sound than EDM so that's nothing against the song, just my personal preference.

Million Reasons is like a perfect textbook example of a ballad. Here are some defining traits of ballads:

> Slow to mid tempo

> Emotional or storytelling lyrical content

> Emphasis on acoustic instruments, typically piano and guitar, over synths and drum pads

> Verse - chorus - verse - chorus  structure, sometimes with a 3rd or 4th verse and/or a bridge

 

A song that is normally a dance disco track can be slowed down and played as a ballad. Gaga likes to turn her dance hits into ballads when she sits at the piano

I don't think the other songs posted in this thread are very good examples of ballads for the most part. Think more "First 5 songs played at a wedding" or "slow song played at Prom" than "a pop girl is sad"  Ballads were HUGE in the 80s as glam rockers 'showed their soft emotional side'
