Joe Biden Announces Social Media Campaign to Promote Lgbtq Acceptance

Former Vice President Joe Biden has joined forces with singer Cyndi Lauper and former NFL player Wade Davis to launch the #AsYouAre campaign -- a movement to spread acceptance of the LGBTQ community.

“We’ll use our resources to highlight the harms of family rejection, and to lift up research, best practices, and personal stories to show the importance of family acceptance,” Biden said in the campaign’s promotional video.

From officiating a same-sex marriage to telling the audience at the annual Democratic National Committee’s annual LGBTQ gala to hold President Donald Trump accountable “for his pledge to be your friend," Biden has been a long-standing supporter of LGBTQ community.

Biden touched on the progress made for advanced equality of LGBTQ members such as the nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a policy ban on gay and lesbian service members.

"While we must continue working to pass laws and implement policies that protect LGBTQ youth across the spectrum of their lives, laws and policies are not enough," Emily Hecht-McGowan, director for LGBTQ Equality at the Biden Foundation, said in a statement. "We must also change the culture. We know that personal stories are the single best tool we have to change hearts and minds to move us towards a culture of acceptance -- not rejection."

"Over the coming weeks, through the #AsYouAre campaign, the Biden Foundation will begin sharing the stories we collect to educate the general public about the reality that many LGBTQ young people face," Hecht-McGowan said. "We will highlight both the harms that come from being rejected and also the beauty that can come from being affirmed and supported. Our goal is to move us towards a world where no young person is rejected by their family or their community simply because of who they are or who they love."

Individuals in the video say submissions are welcomed from all backgrounds because stories have “incredible power” and will move people towards a “culture of acceptance, not rejection.”

“By sharing your stories,” Biden said. “Your stories! We can work together to change the culture and ensure a bright future for the LGBTQ young people of America.”

That could actually happen. i looked into it

 

and i guess if Joe passed away (wish i don't wish, but I'm saying that for the sake of this), Obama would be able to be president again, by finishing out Biden's term. Those in law say that the Constitution is written in a way that says you can't be ELECTED into office more than two terms, but Obama wouldn't be elected if he was finishing Joe's terms because he is the vice president. How interesting

Yes, I guess that is probable. I am sure the right wing will raises issues tho, it won't be easy.

I don't think Obama would be down for that though, not just because he probably feels like he has already served his country, but because even if it was allowed I think it would rightfully be criticised as a sort of potential "loophole" in the constitution and not in the spirit of the constitution.

I wrote "even if it was allowed" purposely too, because it's also kind of an undetermined area that would no doubt have to go to the courts. The issue came up during the last election cycle over whether Bill Clinton could have served as VP under Hillary Clinton. 

The problem lies with the 12th amendment which states "no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States." alongside the 22nd amendment you cite which states "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice".

The courts would have to decide if 'constitutionally ineligible to the office of President' mean (A) 'constitutionally barred from being elected to the office of President,' or (B) 'constitutionally barred from serving in the office of President'.

 If it means option A — if 'eligible' is roughly synonymous, for elected offices, with 'electable' — then Barack Obama would be ineligible to the office of president because of the 22nd Amendment, and thus ineligible to the office of vice president because of the 12th Amendment.

On the other hand, if 'eligible' means simply 'constitutionally barred from serving,' then the 22nd Amendment doesn’t speak to whether Obama is eligible for the office of president, since it only says that he may not be elected to that office. And because there’s nothing in the constitution that makes Obama ineligible for the presidency, the 12th Amendment doesn’t make him ineligible for the vice presidency.

Having that serious cloud of doubt over whether he is even eligible to serve as Vice President would not make for a great campaign. Having that kind of thing tied up in the courts could cause a legitimate constitutional crisis that I think both Joe Biden and Barack Obama would like to avoid.
