Looking at this list, some of the choices are REALLY questionable. Not even being shady, but I actually don't know how they compiled this. How is Ed Sheeran's Shape of You, which came out only in 2017, only one below the Macarena, which everyone has heard countless times and has been earning royalties for decades? How is the Chainsmoker's Closer 30 spots higher than Queen's Another One Bites The Dust, and leagues higher than some Beatles songs? idk it doesn't make sense to me? Again, NOT being shady, but the amount of time some of these songs have had to build legacy would, I think, trump some of these songs that are only months old.

1) Shape of you and closer were both number 1 for about 12 weeks and both broke or came close to breaking the record for the most weeks in the top ten.  I.e. they were really massive hits that stuck around for a long time.  We're talking half a year plus in the top ten.

2) It's not clear that a song's performance counts during time periods when that performance is insufficient to make it chart.  Were they using an inverse points system (1 week at #3 = 98 points, etc.), or were they recounting actual hot 100 points for each song over time? When they do inverse points, they generally weight songs higher during periods of higher turnover, which would boost songs from the 80s but demerit songs from the 90s and 2010s, and to a lesser extent, the 2000s.  They usually do inverse points when they are comparing old songs during time periods when data was relatively sparse and unreliable.

It’s become quite apparent that Billboard killed the charts :what:

I mean...just look at this hideous list :excuseu:

Is this what we will choose to remember? :reductive:

Or is this what we’d rather forget??? :oprah:

How did billboard kill charts when its the only major charts company in the US? Billboard monpolized charts in the US.

Precisely my dear. Monopolies destroy creativity. Monopolies equal corruption.

Im sure it has something to do with the incorporation of digital/streaming/youtube/etc. Their inclusion muddies lists like this.

Charts do not dictate or define cultural impact. Micheal Jacksons first entry is Billy Jean at #86 - he’s literally made the largest cultural impact of any artist, ever, and by a sizable margin no less. Charts can only measure using defined metrics and math. They’re only a small part of the story and a persons art (and it’s impact) can’t be measured subjectively.

Don’t stress about it mates.

Smother Em Eh

Not surprising since it’s her top 3 most known songs.
