Well, no, the Reporter is who read into her words. What she meant was pretty clear, and the article twisted it a little.

For anyone who does not understand, most festivals have film prizes in numerous categories with notable titles being the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival or Golden Bear at Berlin International Film Festival. Studios expecting they have films with critical appeal and high art caliber will often compete for such titles to build prestige for the film and possibly use its festival plaudits to sell the movie based on critical appeal when it is released. What the author is saying is that Warner Bros is not seeking to compete at Venice and will then head to Toronto which is a more commercial festival, though it is often a breakout for Oscar contenders. How the studio rolls out a film can say a lot about their expectations. In this case, it maybe suggests they want to build notoriety and gain attention but that is is not likely to compete at major fests for top prizes and is therefore not being positioned as "that kind" of film, but more of a commercial project. That does not mean they won't campaign for awards or that it would not be awarded. Just the studio's release strategy, which can be telling.

Here's what I believe is going on...

There are people in the business who are still not on the "A Star is Born" train and are looking to stir some negative commentary despite the unanimous praise coming in from all areas.

I believe this will be a critically acclaimed film (much to the critics surprise) with a series of wins at the awards ceremonies leading to the Oscars.

I believe it will gross over $100 million by Christmas (with the full support and backing of theater owners across America who smell a mega hit).

I believe the soundtrack will be an enormous triumph with numerous singles in the top 10.

This film is a juggernaut.

I , in fact, believe the Gaga fans are not prepared for whats about to happen to her.

She will move into a really rarefied air that few have ever occupied. She will be in line with Sinatra, Cher, Streisand, Diana Ross.

I know everyone is thinking of LG6 but they should be entirely focused on ASIB..

She's about to become the biggest star her generation ever produced..

Gaga's acting in it to me was 7/10 at best. And the scene where she was being pulled on stage her facial expression was very bland in relation to her voice

Like it's hard to tell just from a trailer but I don't expect her acting to be out of this world

Of course, there's more to the movie than just Gaga's acting

how can you rate a person's acting from a 2:30 trailer where the trailer focuses on Bradley's lines + Gaga's music

Based on what I saw on the trailer I said. And I did say it's hard to tell from that

But we got a few scenes and I can't say I was super impressed by the bits we did see

This is just the writer's interpretation of Streisand's comment.

Streisand just said it's similar, probably because she is insecure and would never say "yeah it's better than mine" even if it was. The writer is just connecting the dots.

This. Her acting on the trailer objectively is not yet on that level for me to say she has a shot at being nominated for best actress. Her face is a bit stiff, but maybe that’s just how she is.

What I’m thinking though is that later on in the film, her acting will get better. The scenes during the fast cuts were promising. I don’t know if they filmed it in a linear manner but given what she was going through as filming progressed it might reflect on her acting.

I really just can't with you guys writing an entire essay about Gaga's acting based on a few seconds from a trailer. Seriously, it's hilarious.

Especially considering the amount of compliments she's getting by big names in the industry. I mean, keep your negativity until you actually watch the movie, at least.

Can anyone explain what 'out of competition' means?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/75th_Venice_International_Film_Festival

Apparently if you read this article, there are films 'in competition' and there are those 'out of competition' but it doesn't explain much as to what they mean.

Like what are they competing for?

They judge the movies “in competition” with a panel of professional critics and award the best of the festival. The ones being judged are normally very close to being release.
