RIPheygirl 879
Did she tho? ( i know dat this is a stupid thread but there has been worse) Cos if you look at the history of the female indie pop/ alternative scene it is pretty much dead up until the late 2000s and onwards. Sure there is Bjork but after her rise nothing much came afterwards. Then in 2008 Florence arrives and breaks into the mainstream with Dog days are over ( an amazing bop btw) in 2010 and wins a VMA for Best Art Direction. ( Let me remind you that this is BEST ART DIRECTION over BAD ROMANCE ugh the impact) Suddenly in 2010 Marina arrives. Sure she doesn't get the recognition she has now but she still had a a large fanbase despite her chart success. Undoubtedly The Family Jewels had a least a bit of influence by Lungs ( even tho during that era Marina did get pissed in interviews and denied having influence but i think that was more of a phase she went through cos she hated being compared to everyone). However after this Marina did go on with her career and influenced artists like Melanie Martinez and Billie Eilish with Electra Heart. Not long afterwards in 2011 Lana Del Rey stepped onto the scene and released the arguably greatest and most successful album of their genre: Born to Die Now we have Lorde, Birdy, FKA twigs, Sky Ferreira, Grimes, Charli XCX, Aurora, MSMR and even Halsey. Quite a large family.
GypsyBabe 22,836
I love Born To Die so much I’m not sure if I can answer your question as I am more knowledgeable and more of a fan of indie rock/alternative music. But I am sure Florence really helped. She’s awesome and I remember when Dog Days was on the radio I was so excited because it was really cool and different. ⚯͛

River 112,960
I think it's because before 2000s there was less exposure and the indie was really indie by it means: club and bar tours, coachella, selling albums after show etc.. Now Indie's makes videos, sell on iTunes, go on big tours.. they have some sufficient funding for that.. most of the indie pop are signed by major labels.. Come on and wrap that blade of grass around my hairy ass
Bear 7,515
hmm I don't think she revived it because I don't think it's every really been dead I think it's more with the rise of streaming and digital music services that alternative and indie music is more accessible than ever to everyday people. It's true there are a lot pop artists and pop music imitating indie music right now (which don't get me wrong isn't necessarily a bad thing) but I wouldn't class it as strictly "indie pop" or "alternative". It's more like pop but with indie flavourings.
tomsches 17,365
Indie never been dead. Indie music can't really be dead as it is per definition an underground genre. It's just that Florence + The Machine and the other artists you mentioned managed to become more successful than is expected from indie artists. There’s so much cherry picking going on in that OP. Also, it doesn’t even make any sense. So you’re saying that female indie pop was dead until the late 2000s. So when, according to you, was it at its peak? When did it decline?
