“When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice.” Kanye West

EXACTLY.

"when you hear about slavery" - meaning the conversation of slavery has been continuing for decades, if not centuries. He's saying that the use of history in the modern day political climate essentially inhibits growth.

Nowhere in that sentence does he say that slavery is a choice, and he clarified on Twitter.

Y'all can hop on the hate train if you please, but it's misinformed.

Sorry but Kanye isnt that deep of a thinker, he doesnt read books and he doesnt understand philosophical thought. I get you may be a fan but read some Hegel sometime.

This is so overplayed and misinterpreted tbh.

Yes, his ego is insane. Yes, he thinks that he's spreading love and enlightenment, but is misguided. Yes, the MAGA hat was ridiculous. But at TMZ, he NEVER said slavery was a choice. He said that the conversation for 400 years was a choice. He's trying to move past history so that progress can be made, but he's going about it in a radical way.

People hear "slavery" and "choice" and don't even stop for three seconds to try and understand what he's saying, and that's infuriating. Celebrities are constantly misquoted and misinterpreted. It's happened to Gaga before too.

I just wish people would try to have a conversation, and understand, rather than "cancelling" every controversial artist. It's incredibly dull and small-minded.

From Kanye's twitter (comment that he has now removed)

"My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved"

I don't think people are misinterpreting what he is saying.

I am disgusted that you're trying to defend this. Adding you to my ignore list.

But what isn't accurate about that? Slaves were mentally manipulated. And even though they outnumbered planation owners and families, they couldn't do anything. He's commenting on the fact that when someone puts you down, you don't have to accept it, or believe it. And thus comes change.

I don't think he's saying that slaves had the choice to not be slaves, he's not an idiot. But he is saying that in TODAY's world, the slave mentality does nothing but hinder and create more oppression.

You're joking? This clearly shows you know nothing about him tho, and are hopping on the hate train.

His entire career, and especially recent works, have been centered around art, history, and philosophy. Hell, even listen to Diamonds from Sierra Leone to see how he can connect politics to fashion to music.

Also his point is totally misleading because it implies that slavery in the USA ended over 400 years ago. It really did end just 150 years ago, racial segregation in the USA was abolished only 54 years ago. In historical terms.... this is all peanuts. Of course we're going to hear a freaking lot about it, it is still fairly recent.

His lyrics read like they come out of a philosophy 101 class at a community college. That doesnt mean hes a deep thinker because pseudo intellectuals stan him. Same way they do J Cole

No, he directly referred to slaves "having the numbers" to do something about their situation...which is absolutely ignorant, shortsighted and downright disrespectful.

Slaves couldn't do anything about their enslavement because they would be tortured, beaten, raped, separated from their families forever or lynched. Their inability went FAR beyond "mental manipulation". Even if they "had the numbers", they had no power. The power was in the hands of the land owners, the state's, the country's military.

I mean I know. And if that's what he's saying, then yes, agreed.

But, I honestly think that he was trying to make a connection to BLM movement and racism today, and about resisting. There is a mental element to all of this, and being oppressed by "the white man." Clearly it backfired and he didn't say anything that was helpful.

My issue with all of this is that there's no conversation. In 2018, we immediately cancel and destroy people because we're offended. The man isn't stupid, and has fought for black people his entire career. So why aren't we trying to discuss this and figure out what he means?

He actually said on camera, and I quote, "When you hear about slavery for 400 years ... For 400 years? That sounds like a choice."

RAMROD

This is like 2007Ney except with Kanye, he seems to be in a point of no return. The minute he said what he said about slavery, I felt like he's hopeless case.

IDC if that is done for promo, or for free speech, that is not right regardless. It is just so sad a man this talented just lost. Ever since Donda died, he is just not the same anymore.

When's the last time Kanye had a radio hit though? All his albums are oh-so artsy fartsy samples, auto-tuned yodelling and white noise since 2012, that's not really radio material in the first place.

this is actually a station that focus on playing throwback hip-hop/R&B hits, so in a way, this hits him worse.

His royalties are taking a hit.
