Charles Lazarus, who founded Toys "R" Us 70 years ago, died Thursday, week after the company announced it will be forced to shut down its U.S. operations.

Lazarus, 94, no longer held a stake in the chain. He started the company in 1948 when he was 25, anticipating that the post-war baby boom would create demand for baby supplies and toys. He remained CEO until 1994.

"He was the father of the toy business," said Michael Goldstein, who succeed him as CEO. "He knew the toys and loved the toys and loved the kids who would shop in the stores. His face lit up when he watched kids playing with toys."

His death was confirmed by the company.

I wonder at that fragile age if a disheartening of seeing his life company fail played a role

Even Corporations aren't above failing. As an investor I have to analyse different stocks all the time

Ppl hate on Corporations for being money hungry etc... But truth is, due to competition the vast majority of Corporations have profit margins of no more than 5% to 10%. Some struggling companies run losses. The profit numbers sound huge sometimes but when you break it down by unit to their size in proportion it really isnt

Of course there's exceptions. Some Corporate elites like Apple, McDonald's etc consistently make a lot of money but they don't accurately represent the Corporate world as a whole

I never as a kid pictured toys r us failing :(

I think it's sad that children of this generation play less with toys and more with ipads/phones. In a way it kinda kills creativity and simplicity, although it's arguable and there might be some creative apps that allow some kids to create stories (never seen that but maybe i'm wrong), I still think that a simple doll or a simple truck and your imagination is so important and magical.

edit: i know that toys r us isn't a success right now because of the internet selling toys with better prices + more convenient than going to a store and having to wait in line to pay, causing too much stress. but i still see a shift and a change with kids right now, they love ipads, and apps and playing games on a screen. Just my observation
