Dianne Feinstein fails to receive endorsement from California Democrats

In a rare and embarrassing rebuke, the California Democratic Party did not offer its endorsement to the state's very own Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who is running for her fifth term in the 2018 midterms at the age of 84.

Nearly 3,000 delegates gathered at the annual state convention in San Diego on Saturday.

Results were announced on Sunday morning and Feinstein's progressive primary opponent, state Senate leader Kevin de León, received 54 percent of the vote from delegates, while Feinstein secured only 37 percent, Politico reported. The threshold to receive the party's endorsement is 60 percent, which neither candidate was able to meet. The decision leaves both without a formal endorsement from the state's party and neither will receive the extra campaign cash that typically comes with it.

Nonetheless, de León immediately quickly celebrated the moment as a win for grassroots candidates and as the latest testament to populist condemnation of establishment politics.

"The outcome of today’s endorsement vote is an astounding rejection of politics as usual, and it boosts our campaign’s momentum as we all stand shoulder-to-shoulder against a complacent status quo," he said in a prepared statement, Politico reported. "California Democrats are hungry for new leadership that will fight for California values from the front lines, not equivocate on the sidelines."

Well Kevin got a way more delegate votes then Dianne, so I guess California Dems should unify around him?

California is progressive... If you can't support a progressive candidate in California where can you? It's also pretty hard to have unity if you're sitting around calling the other side of the party "Bernie Bros" who will "ruin the country again". Only around 6% of Bernie Supporters refused to vote for Hillary in the General Election compared to 25% of Hillary supporters who voted Mccain in 2008 (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2017/08/24/did-enough-bernie-sanders-supporters-vote-for-trump-to-cost-clinton-the-election/?utm_term=.270c32255916), so let's not act as if the progressives haven't been playing ball. Let's not go around slandering progressive candidates, I mean tearing down people on the same side as you gets you Trump right?  

You need 60% of the delegate votes for an endorsement, no candidate reached that, however Kevin won 54% of the votes compared to Feinstein's 37%. Want unity? Why not rally around the most popular candidate? Otherwise your position just seems to be "Shut up progressives, don't run, don't challenge, let us win and just accept the status quo". Pretty shitty standards when the most popular candidate is not allowed to run because of you think it goes against "unity".

If people want the Democratic party to stop losing, then they should be for finding the strongest and most popular Democratic candidate to rally around.

Unfortunately, there are people that just want progressives to shut up. Which is why I hope Kevin wins this race. He'd be a much better ally to the Sanders/Warren wig of the party.

Yeah for sure. He isn't a perfect candidate, considering he does accept corporate money, but he has championed single-payer health care, a “sanctuary state” bill, a 100 percent clean energy mandate and has been very strong on the issue of gun control so he is still a pretty strong advocate of progressive values.

Absolutely. Being a single payer champion alone is great since Dianne is beyond opposed to it. We need to elect people that support single payer because in the next democratic administration, we're really gonna have to push it.

Polls have Feinstein with a 40% lead over de Leon among Democrat primary voters.

She's been leading much of the fight back movement and was responsible for that public release. At this time, the Dems also need to keep around some experienced and wise leaders as the a Republicans try to distort and hide the truth.

Anyway, he’s better than Feinstein on many policy issues. Again, when will people understand that it comes down to what their policy stances are... not their names... and not “they’ve done for the party.” We’re living in the here and now and talking about things that are relevant NOW.

It's her fifth term. That said, I'm totally here for her getting booted out of the senate. She's way to moderate for her state.
