It could of very well at some point been something else not related to religion that the voices told her to do Ppl on drugs hurt themselves all the time especially hard drugs. It doesn't have to be about religion I know ppl who used religion as a means to give them purpose and in some cases actually helped their issues and in turn addictions So u can't generalize like that.
