Why did Perfect Illusion flop?

Because there's a learning curve for people to appreciate songs that aren't filtered through autotune with vocals so weak you suspect the producers hired the first girl they found who's so softspoken you have to ask her to repeat herself twice before you hear what she's saying.

Not catchy enough, not pop enough, vocals are quite agressive.

It's just not radio friendly neither it's the first single material.

Doesn't change the fact that I love the song and was dying to hear it live :rockstar:

Probably because it’s hard to find a strong melody in it. People like listening to strong melodies that are easy for the brain to latch onto and remember. PI, by contrast, has a melody but she shouts it more so than any other song of hers and being as short and loud as it is it makes the melody seem abrasive. That’s why, despite what others think, DiC already had a better chance at success as a single from the get-go because the verses are very melodic and the progression is easy to follow. I’m not saying I am still chomping at the bit for it to be a single or anything, but that’s why it has the ingredients to be a single more easily then PI.

Plus, energy-wise, it doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s always high octane and intense. BR is intense, but look at how the verses build to the prechorus which explodes into the chorus. It’s all very gradual and easy to follow. If you’re going to have a lead single, or any single, really, it needs mass appeal. PI doesn’t really do that as it takes a bit to get into it. You can’t really have that in today’s music landscape. That’s how you get lost.

Y’all it’s not rocket science and it isn’t any kind of conspiracy. The song isn’t that good, it had very little promo, and Gaga’s streaming power is non existent.

I LOVE YOU

It was her best lead single. I don't know why LMs don't like change. I thought it was great. It's one of her few songs I don't skip.

It’s not about not liking change, it’s about recognizing he fact the while the song might be liked by some members of her fanbase, a die hard Gaga fan liking a song does not equal the general public liking the song.

The song just isn’t that good, it’s simply okay. And it’s a poor choice for lead single, but then again, Joanne didn’t contain any huge single opportunities other than Million Reasons.

Inferno

Its annoying and jarring and remains every bit as high octane and intense as it was on first listen. so it remained true to their intention behind creating the track, but that doesnt make it enjoyable. Personally I like it and it grew on me but im also obsessed with her. For a long time I really disliked it and thus I find it easy to understand why it made no impact. If i werent already obsessed with her I would've probably kept on thinking it was terrible.

Idk I think A-YO could have done well. It always got solid reception, but I think uptempo numbers of Gaga’s typically get shunted aside when she takes to the piano so pitting it against MR wasn’t exactly fair lol both should have been proper singles if you ask me.

No promo and the song sounds like something you would get a perfect headache from. I love the song personally  (after forcing myself to listen like 20+times lol) but i can see why others don't.

MR on the other hand, If someone don't love that song, they deserve a get to hell card tbh :tony:

REALITY

The biggest issue was promo to be honest. Personally, I love the song and I think sonically it was probably her best lead single, but promo wise, it just wasn't there. That being said, it was also controversial, sonically speaking as well. Personally, I loved the song since the very beginning; however, there were obviously some people in the beginning (and some now) who don't really like the song—and I'm speaking from a Little Monster's point of view, not the general public.

Unfortunately, not a lot of the general public liked it. Most people thought it sounded too raw, unpolished, and loud. However, those things can be fixed with good promo and radio support. I mean, if something's being played on the radio, it doesn't matter if it's good or bad. What matters is that it's reaching millions of people and eventually, they'll turn over to like it.

This is a personal theory of mine, but I don't think Gaga really wanted it to become the lead single. The only two songs that's should huge interest in were "A-YO" and "John Wayne," and personally, I think that she wanted them to be the first and second single. During the PI era where she gave all those radio interviews, I remember her saying that it wasn't her who chose PI as the lead single, but then quickly back-tracked and said it was "mutual decision" between the label and her. To be honest, I think that was a slip up and she just had to cover it up as quickly as she could. Granted, she also did talk about MR alot, but that was after it was already announced as the second single. I believe she responded to a tweet one time saying that—before the album came out—"John Wayne" was her favorite song on the album. Heck, she even gave it its own music video, so she had to love it.

I think the lack of promo honestly came from the fact that she didn't want it to be the lead single. It was something that I believe she was sort of forced to do. Maybe not totally, but I do believe they pushed it onto her, thinking it'd be a great lead. Granted, it is a great lead, but I think its downfall is in part due to her want to make another song the lead.

It's a great song but it's not a great single choice. I love the video but it feels like such an odd choice for a lead single. Million Reasons would've been much more a surprise/hit.
