Why did Perfect Illusion flop?

It’s really not radio friendly.

But she didn’t promote it at all. Like no one knew about it. Then MR came out 3 weeks later. And A-YO right after. Even now people don’t know there was a single besides MR.

It could have had cute success if she gave it one or two TV performances. Radio spun it decently the first week.

People keep giving their opinions that the song “wasn’t good”....but the truth is garbage tops the charts a lot of the time nowadays, so I don’t think quality mattered.

It wasn’t what was currently being played on radio (very common for Gaga), but also it did not have strong promotion.

Million Reasons was placed in a much better position to take off in the United States.

Exactly. I mean it debuted at #15 with just sales and little radio support.

Easily could have been a top 10 if she performed it somewhere, gotten on some Spotify playlists and got some banners on iTunes.

-There was lots of hype as usual with Gaga, so expectations are higher

- the verses are great but the chorus is terrible

- the pronounciation on some words is weird (eg "love")

- vocals are too harsh/dramatic, needed something lighter

- video and overall aesthetic of era didn't help

No, it's not that good.

For a song that short (3 minutes), it gets boring halfway through.

Unlike what so many fans apparently think, I find it incredibly radio-friendly. But it just gets too repetitive and to be honest radio-friendly is not always a hit. I mean, Love on the Brain is NOT radio friendly and it's one of Rihanna's most played songs on the radio. Lots of radio hits nowadays lack a strong chorus. "Radio-friendly" has changed, it's not Kary Perry pop anymore.

Promo was awful. It didn't even feel like a lead single. She gave a few radio interviews and not much more. She seemed bored most of the times.

And again, it's a song you get easily tired of listening to.

It's been a year and a half and I'm not tired at all :trollga:

Same. I love the song as much as ever, and think it could have done much better commercially with a little promotion.

Y’all it’s not rocket science and it isn’t any kind of conspiracy. The song isn’t that good, it had very little promo, and Gaga’s streaming power is non existent.

because you uncultured swine.mp3s who listen to music with one earbud in or listen through your phone speaker don't know what good music is!! its one of her best songs!! perfect illusion is the reason why I want gaga to collab with Tame Impala.

Spoiler

no tv promo was also a good reason :selena:

For the reason that many of us (including me) didn't like it at first; screechy vocals and just a little OTT in general. I came to love it, but generally if first impressions aren't good the GP won't like it :selena:

The truth is that the song didn't work because of two reasons: the GP found it too repetitive and Interscope put very little money into promoting it. If it weren't for a Million Slays coming in like a wrecking ball on it's own, the album would have had no hit singles. She wasn't shy about accepting an Indie record budget for Joanne. They weren't pushing the song through Payola the way Katy's team or Selena's team does every year.

I ADORE the song but upon first listen I knew it would do nothing chart wise. It is too loud for radio in this current musical climate. The GP likes soft vocals and soft beats a lot these days AND Gaga's vocals can be a little too grating for some. I remember a big part of why my friends didnt like it was because they said her voice sounded too sharp for their ears. Add the fact that she did not promote it anywhere apart for in Japan and you basically have a flop waiting to happen.
