ANVEEROY 61,080
Beyonce 's father and former manager has claimed that the only reason she's so successful is because of her 'light skin'. Matthew Knowles said during a frank interview that black singers are more likely to be played on the radio and enjoy success if they have a paler complexion. He also opened up about his upbringing, admitting that he was guilty of 'colourism' - same-race prejudice based on a person's skin tone - because he'd been conditioned to think that way from an early age. "When it comes to black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio? Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids, and what do they all have in common?" The interviewer asked if it was that they had lighter skin, and Matthew responded: "Do you think that's an accident?" Discussing his new memoir Racism: From the Eyes of a Child, he said: "I used to date mainly white women or very high-complexion black women that looked white. "I actually thought when I met Tina, my former wife, that she was white. Later I found out that she wasn't, and she was actually very much in-tune with her blackness. Saint Hollywood 37,363
Beyonce's talent is why she's famous, but let's not act like her skin tone didn't help in being achieving such success. It's not a surprise that the industry (and the public) have preferences towards people of lighter skin. There are many dark-skinned artists out there that deserve more recognition, but don't get it due to their race and the prejudice that is associated with it. I'm glad to see that there are more of these artists on the rise now... they deserve it.

Borislshere 52,923
Colorism is such a huge issue that often gets ignored. People are quick to laugh at and make fun of black people for bleaching their skin without asking why they do it.

Lord Temptation 11,209
Colourism >>> racism. I feel like racism was invented by universities, whereas colourism is as old as time. Because even white people have prejudice against very pale or pasty skin (seen as an indicator of poor health maybe?) Similarly brown skin people have prejudice against very dark skin (associated with poverty)
