Whispering 18,865
Miley, Kesha and JT all have roots in Tennessee. They grew up around country music and lived in rural areas. Gaga grew up going to an Upper Manhattan Private School and living in a concrete jungle. I love Joanne, but I'm not going to pretend that Gaga grew up listening to country music and living on a farm. Kesha's roots are in country music, she grew up on it living in Nashville, her mom even wrote for Dolly Parton. I'm sure Kesha would've always had tinges of country and rock in her music if it weren't for the image forced on her. Joanne could've helped push her to do it and show her that her genre indeed can be successful, but it definitely wasn't a case of her taking concepts as her own for a gimmick. Not at all. With Miley, maybe. I love her more country side but this does seem sudden and not completely genuine. But I'm not sure. With JT, I have no idea, I avoid him tbh. Overall, yes. Gaga is setting a trend and I suspect "stripped-down" country-rock-pop will continue getting bigger, but none of it being as genuine and full of heart and soul as Rainbow and Joanne. I agree with you Kesha's roots was always been country music. EDIT: as well as Miley Mychal
zakariah 11,724
Of course she did, for she is Lady Gaga, Queen of Music, Khaleesi of the Great New York City, Lady Regnant of the Pop World, Stefani of the Haus Germonatta, the First of her Name, Protector of Art, Mother of Pop, The Unfloppable, Queen of the Pop Girls, the Music Industry and the LGBT Community, Protector of the Gays. Kleth 72
Not like that, I mean like we know, Gaga is completely from the city but after Joanne was released it probably inspired the others to release albums based on country, and a tone down image. I'm not saying that the Joanne persona or image inspired them in their art because they have these country roots. But the fact that she introduced this to the mainstream probably made the other artists feel like they were going to be able to release albums with this style and not receive bad critics, comments. Let's say that she took the risk first only to release music in this style, the first one to follow the trend like someone said in the comments above she predicted it. Mister Gaga 22,960
I don't think Joanne started a trend; i think the Gaga of 2016/7 did. Showcasing vocals, singing directly from the heart, showing vulnerability...that's the trend imo.
StrawberryBlond 14,926
While the likes of Kesha and Miley had country roots and grew up in the south, they made the music that their labels told them to make and when Miley broke free, she made Bangerz and Dead Petz, neither of which are country. She could have gone back to her roots at any point but waiting until after Joanne made me wonder if she thought Gaga's success was a sign that she could go for it and not flop and it might win her the critical acclaim she's been craving (she was very vocal with her anger towards the mass mixed/under par reception for Younger Now). And as for Kesha, we know for a fact that Gaga was inspiring her, as she supported Kesha throughout her campaign, was photographed with her and talked about their meetings. Let's not deny that Kesha thought stripping down her image and going back to basics like Gaga had might be beneficial to her. And as for Justin, again, he may have been raised in the south but he abandoned all that stuff as soon as he got famous and bar a one-off live country duet, he's had no more interest in country music. There is no way his interest in it came completely out the blue, especially after seeing how well Gaga was received post-SB. Knowing he was likely to do it next time perhaps goaded him on that this was the best way to make a comeback. At the end of the day, country had fallen from popularity just before Gaga released Joanne. Even the biggest names in country were struggling. The new acts proved to be one hit wonders. "Bro country" has been getting more urban with time. Taylor officially stepped away from any country associations in 2014 and has never looked back. Gaga took a massive risk making a country infused album at this but she took the plunge and miraculously, several other acts decided to do the same thing 6 months or so later. Coincidence? I think not. It's beyond me how even her own fans won't give her credit. She's always struggled to get her dues for making a difference on the music scene. It was also no surprise that after the release of AP, so many other female pop acts who had always toed the line with a mainstream sound suddenly decided to take more risks with their music and do something a bit more off the beaten path (Miley with psychadelic Dead Petz, Rihanna with contemporary RnB Anti, Katy with "deep" sounding Witness). Suddenly, the biggest names didn't want to be as generic anymore, everyone wanted to be "un artiste." I mean, Rihanna was putting her album artwork up for reveal in a gallery and blindfolding the audience members, getting them to dip their fingers in ink so they could read braille to reveal her song titles. The Rihanna of just a few years ago would have never done something so kooky. That moment was pure AP era.
migamiga 12,102
i don’t think gaga inspired these artists to go in this direction in the way that everyone is describing. justin, kesha, and miley all have nashville roots whereas gaga is from nyc. i do think she gave them the NERVE to try a different direction though. the great thing about gaga is that she doesn’t care as much about success as other people (at least not anymore). she is always willing to take a risk and listen to her artistic instinct. i think other artists might have thought about going in this direction but was too scared to take the leap because country music is not trendy. but maybe after they saw how it worked for gaga, they felt comfortable taking a chance. Bling 31,489
For all those saying Miley and Kesha’s roots were in country, DO you think they would’ve went that route though had it not been for Gaga? or would they have stayed super pop/dance?
