Piano ballads were the absolute trend late 2013/early 2014. Plays weren't counted as sales back then boo, Dope DID sell that much and reached #8 for a reason... which is that the GP ate it like bread.

Again -it had 8.2 million streams and 95% of those came from the live performance. She sold 31,000 digital downloads which put her at no. 60 on the Digital Songs chart.

Dont kid yourself, again :triggered:

Flop for sure. The production is nice at times, and the chorus is actually great. But the verses and some of the lyrics just wouldn't connect with the general public nor radio.

REALITY

Absolutely not. I never understood why some people thought that it would have been a great single, and a great lead single at that. It's just so left-field. I get that Gaga always wants to be experimental and that she wants to have each and every lead single be different from the stuff that's on the radio, but at the same time, you need to be realistic about how it would perform. I think it's too "creepy" for the GP to handle, with the whole HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA and the "I killed my former and left her in the truck on Highway 10" lyrics.

Applause was by far the best lead single choice.

Nah it would have flopped hard without a doubt, even worse than Perfect Illusion. Applause was a wise choice indeed, a radio-friendly song is always the best choice as lead single.

Yes, I was positive we'd have a KILLER album when it leaked. Sadly, it didn't meet my expectations, but after the Demo's leaked I'm positive it was Troy and the rats influence that skewed her killer ideas. Mary Jane, Fashion!, Venus, Aura, even Applause demos are so much better (personally) than the studios, especially the iTunes festival songs! MANiCURE, Sexxx Dreams, IWBWY, Swine, all amazing and better than their studio counterparts. Maybe it's my adoration for raw Gaga, but wow, is she an amazing creator. I have a ying-yang dislike for ARTPOP, but only because the ARTPOP I love isn't on Spotify or sold in stores. (except for DWUW, but I love the solo version just as much as the R. Kelly version)

It'd have been cool to have it as a promo single before Applause but I think it's too weird and experimental to be the lead one. Even Bad Romance and Judas had "that" experimental sound but they were still catchy as hell and had a lot of hooks to become successful. Aura on the other hand has too many weird noises (long intro) and as much as I love and think the chorus is one of her strongest, the rest of the song (especially the vocals) would've turned people away.

I don’t think it would’ve flopped had it received the promo Applause did. The radio was going through a generic EDM phase during the time Applause was released, so releasing Aura would of been the radio’s saving grace. The radio version wouldn’t have the intro, that’s for sure.

Aura as the lead single would have killed her career so bad. It's an amazing song but the GP would have reacted in a very negative way, especially with the burqa lyric (unfortunately)

My best friend loves Gaga and it took her a few years to like the song cause the intro creeped her out too much
