(Reuters) - A person was shot on Monday at the Texas Tech University police division in Lubbock and the campus was placed on lockdown, according to police and a Twitter message from the university.

A special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team was dispatched to look for the suspect, who was still at large, Lubbock police Officer J. Rodgers said by phone. He confirmed that one person was shot at the school's police division but declined to immediately provide any other details.

The person shot was a police officer who has died, Lubbock television station KCBD reported.

The message on the university's Twitter page advised people at the campus to take shelter.

Welcome to the U.S.A.

I feel terrible that I can read this stone faced. It happens literally every day.

*sigh* my thoughts go out to the victim's family. Hopefully something is done soon. Regulating a gun accessory is not enough.

I'm at the point where I think "thought and prayers" are BS. All I think is "meh"

Which is incredibly disturbing.

I don't think it's disturbing. Death will always happen. Unless you want to have complete control of the population, murder will be a thing, and we live in a country that explicitly states our freedoms in a constitution.

Humans aren't endless empathy machines. We can't be upset about every little thing. It's natural, otherwise it wouldn't happen. If we concerned ourselves over everything we would be tragic messes. And anyway, mourning is for the families and friends of the dead. That's where the most genuine anguish will happen.

Well I'm not speaking about death in general. Just shootings. Which our country has a massive problem with. I'm numb to it which speaks volumes about our country and society. There are places in the world where this would be national news and it would shock the population. Not here, we are used to it.

Highly disturbing to me.

Update: Shooting was drug related. University police confronted him about drug paraphernalia and the suspect killed the officer.

Senseless killing.

Suspect is Hollis A. Daniels, 19 years old. Came in for routine welfare check, cops suspected drugs. Took him over to check, he pulled out gun and shot cop in head. Fled on foot and is now believed to be driving a 2001 Silver BMW SUV. 6 foot, 140 pounds, red hair.

A typical day in America :madge:

I think the NRA and the Republicans' plan is to let as many shootings as possible happen until people are desensitized and stop talking about gun control :saladga:

So he's still out there :duck:

Everyone in that area better stay safe. Texas still has the death penalty right? He's probably thinking that's what he has to look forward to which means he has nothing to lose. I hope they catch him soon.

It's just so stupid how killing an officer even crossed his mind. The punishment for getting busted with drugs would be much less. Idiot. Now someone lost their life over this ****ery.
