StrawberryBlond 14,881
True, I've noticed other artists who haven't had massive peaks but have nonetheless managed to maintain steady sales throughout their entire career, with no massive drops. Paloma Faith is lucky to get one top ten hit per album but her sales have stayed steady in a way that is so rarely seen in music despite that. That suggests that building a strong, loyal fanbase no matter how you perform in the charts, is key. Pink has always been such an underrated hitmaker and even though she's had so much success, she's weirdly overlooked. I don't quite get it. I've seen too many artists have a huge debut/sophomore album and then drop like a stone not long afterwards. I think it's best to not focus on becoming a megastar with record-breaking sales because it'll only blow up in your face at some point. Expectations get too high and the media will want to tear you down. We saw that happen to Gaga. 2 acclaimed albums, but then she released BTW, which many thought was not quite up to scratch, and then the downfall inevitably began. If she hadn't become the #1 pop girl, maybe it wouldn't have turned out that way. As MJ said: "The bigger the star, the bigger the target." I think that's precisely the reason why the likes of Britney and Xtina had commercial and social downfalls but Pink's managed to sidestep all of that because the same pressure wasn't on her. Whatever happens in the future, it seems her hardcore Aussie fanbase will always have her back anyway.
spicemuncher 1,708
Reading through this thread was a bit disappointing. I understand that Pink may not cater to everyone’s taste, and that a lot of her singles tend to be made for the masses, but that only adds to her. She’s found this formula of having a minimum of 3-5 hit songs on each album, and doing what she pleases with the rest. I will not accept anyone saying that she has a “generic voice” though. She is easily one of the top 5 vocalists to come out in the past 20 years. Do your research, watch, listen and learn. She is nothing short of incredible vocally. Oh and buy Beautiful Trauma this Friday!

They aren't looking to make her compete among the new girls and one-hit wonders; they're aiming for longevity. The only thing is that I'm not entirely sure they know how to get there musically. It seems like no matter what Gaga releases it isn't taken to as warmly as something by P!nk. Barring MR, I don't think they've had single choices that have the best shot at audience resonance since TEOG or Applause. I think Gaga needs more singles. Like if you look at her collection now, it's kinda weak compared to other artists 10 years into their careers. BYE

But I think a big part of that is that they pick shitty singles that derail eras and prevents further singles from happening.
