Gaga & Opera

I recently stumbled across an article from 2015 where a classical musician reviewed Gaga's vocals at the Oscars and I can't help but think, 'Wouldn't It be amazing if Gaga was asked to do an operatic performance similar to what Aretha Franklin did at the 1998 Grammys?'. Here's the article- http://www.classicfm.com/events/oscars/news/lady-gaga-oscars-performance/

IDK about opera, but she is definitely suitable for Broadway.

She'd kill it, singing opera IMO is a lot easier than singing pop.

Singing opera is just technique + diction. Singing pop is tone, emotion, technique + diction. Singing in falsetto and head voice is specifically difficult to pull of healthily in pop because you have to find the middle ground of "How can I produce this sound in a healthy manner?" and "How can I make this sound smooth and remove any operatic tendencies so it doesn't sound totally disconnected to the rest of the voice that I used in this song?".

Gotta remember Aretha is a true legend for a reason, so I'm not surprised by anything she accomplishes.  I do think Gaga could pull it off.  Maybe @Gypsy Life @babs or @BBhomemaker could weigh in on this.  Those not familiar with Aretha might enjoy her finesse in singing soul:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=7Ifw8JhDBvs

nnnggg I don't wanna be mean but imagine having to train your voice since you're a child to be able to fill a theatre for 3 hours every night without amplification and then being told singing pop is harder.

Yes perhaps one could learn proper lyrical technique, but that doesn't make one an opera singer. And there are a lot of lyrical/opera singers who carry tone and emotion, just in the same way some pop singers are bland.

Good popular singing is not easy, at all, but you will find a lot of people who are aces at pop who fail miserably when trying to do an opera number, and people who will study for years and yet will not be able to find a good full tone.

Aretha is a legend indeed. but imo that Nessun Dorma was atrocious, and I consider myself to not be snobby at all. I think Gaga could try to pull it off but it's really not an easy technique to handle.

I love that kind of music, but I dont see Gaga doing Nessun Dorma or any Puccini's like songs, doesnt go well with her rock-pop deep voice (remenber she had to train like a year for that perfomance). Gaga could do something more like classical crossover, like Sarah Brightman's Harem, and would make it her own:golfclap:, classics are not much well received this days tho

Spoiler

e.g.: C2C:nails:

I feel like they mean more challenging or not for Gaga. At this point, she's already trained her voice incredibly so now it's just about nailing the technique. It's not like training for her pop shows where she has to learn choreography, breathing technique, stage queues, etc. This is just her and her voice which is already very very resonant and powerful. Yeah, it's a ton of hard work, but I think for her *physically* it's not nearly as draining as pop is where she has the constant worry of how it will impact her body pain.

I wouldn't call it atrocious because she wasn't trying to compete with opera divas to sing the work as they do.  She was injecting her own style into it, making it her own.

I would guess that Gaga would train hard to try to sing it as close as she could to the divas.  Rather than go through all that work, I would love to see her do a stint on Broadway.  I wonder if that's actually on her bucket list.

I have no doubt Gaga has the chops to do it! but it's a lot of work.  and even then she would probably not become a full on opera singer but just a very good lyrical vocalist.

There is so much modulation and overall technique you need to be aware of to do opera pieces right, it's crazy :selena:

Yeah that's what I was trying to say with me not being a snob, I was conscious the first time listening to it of what I should be expecting but nnnggg I just really couldn't get into it. Still no shade to her, she is still a legend, it just one interpretation of hers that I couldn't bare.

I would love to see her do Broadway! that would be a dream, absolutely. Homegirl needs to stop smoking if she's ever serious about a part in Broadway though:nails:

I remember watching an aria and thinking Could Gaga do this? but I ended up concluding Maybe not :selena: But Gaga is a textbook Broadway star. The voice, charisma, attitude, and the hunties :selena: also many (if not most) Broadway greats are local (from NY) and guess who's also from there :selena: I think she should retire music soon and move to theatre. It'd make a great career choice and solidify her legacy.

Oh yeah, definitely so much technique. I think that's more in her wheelhouse than the physical work of a pop show, though. For example, I feel like The Sound of Music was easier for her to train for than the Super Bowl just purely because she had to focus all of her efforts into one very specific area that she's already incredibly talented in, ya know?

I know that Aretha is a Master in gospel but I didn't know that she do a little of opera, her performance is not bad but not amazing, you can hear that she's not a professional expert for opera but sure she got a strong voice, I think that she got some skills from the gospel, that helped her with the notes, there are some similarities between gospel and opera. Even if I appreciate her voice better in soul music, but you know Aretha, she's a diva, so I'm not surprise to see her trying a performance like this :giggle: .

I think that Gaga can do something like this, we already see it with the SB with the national anthem (who need a lot of technique) and at the Oscars too :diane:, + Gaga got Jazz skills, that mean powerfull voice and soul, her voice become an instrument like a drum or a trumpet, she don't even need to sing words (like a Pop song) she just need the sound of her voice, so I think with a really strong workout because opera is really hard :laughga:, she could serve us a good performance

but like you said Browday would be fantastic for her :flutter:

Bye bye wigs :applause:
