Cardi B Drags Azealia after Azealia Drags Her

I can think of much better female rap songs than Bodak Yellow but honestly, I would rather the #1 went to someone like Cardi, who's humble and came from nothing than someone like Azealia or Nicki who have bad attitudes and think they're way better than they are. I don't really like it when bad people get success as it only fuels their already deluded egos.

Cardi FTW...

PS: I really dislike when people say songs “deserve” to be #1 lol if it was meant to be #1 It would have been.

To start off, I just wanna say with all due respect and out of the door of friendly disagreement

I'd have to disagree with you. Nicki's success as a female emcee had alot to do with her Barbie image and her incorporating elements of pop (biggest genre at the time) with rap (second biggest genre at the time as well). Her appeal was no doubt gonna be massive. You had kids falling in love with her without even having to listen to her music. Her biggest hits were essentially 80% Pop (ex: Superbass, Starships). Nicki brought attention to female rappers yes but in no way or form has she shaped the general's public's liking towards an entire genre sung by the female sex. We had Missy and Kim slaying way before the glimpse of Nicki. While Nicki is extremely talented, one cannot deny her commercial push was by the hands of many A-listers being Wayne, Drake, Britney, Rihanna etc. So you taking about grind when her career success was sorta of a formula is honestly ironic. Cardi is honestly the one grinding, the girl came from nothing, had no one push her commercially, did not rely on pop tunes, did not rely on making a song about her butt, did not have a feature and for that she simply got a number one (at a time where it's way more competitive and hard to even break the top 10). I've seen how people react to the song. The song is honestly loved for the way it makes people feel good and super confident. Giving a simple vibe of "No one can mess with me or get in my way, I'm gonna be me whether you like it or not", a strong message that's needed in this offensive day and age. Nicki's songs have always made her come off as royalty, people lived through her songs where as with Cardi the listener is living with her.

I agree with 100% of what you're talking about, I guess I just consider her building from features "doing the grind." Like, she EARNED those features. They weren't crap, they were quality. I mean, her verse on Monster is hands down the best part of that song. She really busted her ass on those features before Pink Friday and made its debut something. When I say she took the grind, I mean that she did what she had to do to get to where she is like Gaga did in ditching the rock band and soft pop stuff. Do I think it was all very good? Nah, Nicki's pop stuff never really appealed to me, but I think she really put in her time to get to her place. She was clever and it paid off for her. I also left out Missy and Kim because they were from a different generation of female rappers so I wasn't sure if the record applied to them or not, but I would totally give it to Missy Elliott if the choice was mine.

I guess, to me, it doesn't matter what you rely on. Nicki relied on her talents for writing catchy lyrics (even if they were about butts) to get herself up there. She may have made herself more pop, but she still made it and didn't pay her way in. She earned the respect of rap industry veterans and climbed her way in which I find admirable. I'm not her biggest fan; actually, I haven't listened to her stuff since RR, but I think she works super hard and I admire that even if I don't like her music very much. That's not to say I'm discrediting Cardi B, like I said, I only just heard of her. I'm just saying that it's a shame that for what Nicki did opening the door that she couldn't also have some of the same glory. They are both very deserving individuals even if I like neither of their works all that much; I just think Nicki should be given a bit of credit for opening up the door for female rappers in the 2010s because that takes a fierce personality to break into that man's club. But to Nicki's success I give credit to Lil Kim and Missy because they gave her a foundation albeit a bit earlier. I guess I just want everyone to be recognized haha
