Basically, the world is divided into nations according to their location and the element their people master (fire, water, earth, air). Only one person is capable of mastering the four elements, the Avatar. The whole series is about the last avatar, Aang, learning to master the four elements with his friends in order to face the Fire Nation which is trying to conquer the whole world.

It’s literally explained in the opening of the show

holy scheisse

There are four types of benders and each one belongs to different "nations" throughout the Avatar world: air benders (air nomads), water benders (north/south pole water tribes), earth benders (earth kingdom), fire benders (fire nation).

The avatar is the one bender who can master all 4 types of bending

When the fire nation goes rogue and commits mass genocide against the air benders, destroying them all, Aang is the final air bender remaining (and coincidentally, the Avatar)

When an Avatar dies, a new one is reincarnated. Aang is the new reincarnation post-Air nomad destruction and he is found by a brother and sister of the water tribe in episode 1.

The rest of the series pans out with the trio, and other friends, trying to restore peace and balance to the Avatar world as Aang tries to mater the other 3 types of bending.

Amazing show

AND it has an amazing spinoff, The legend of Korra, which is about Aang's successor after his death

RAMROD

It’s a journey for the hero and his friends to hone their skills and build alliance with many people to defeat a tyrant nation.

It is everything. It is dantasy. It is action film. It is political. It is comedy. It is coming of age film. And so on
