Hurricane IRMA 7/09/17 Update

Impacts.

Hurricane Irma caused compete devastation in the caribbean when it barreled through. The worst hit have been: Barbuda where 95% of buildings were severely damaged, St Martin, Anguilla and St Barts where almost 90% of buildings were also damaged. To put it into perspective the 4 strongest buildings on the island of st martin were quasi destroyed. There is currently no power/water or cell service on these islands which is why it is currently a bit of a black zone of information, but in the coming days/hours we will realize the amount of devastation caused. Already 10 people have been confirmed to have died on the islands and that death toll is expected to rise.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced he would travel to the worst hit areas as soon as possible.

Puerto rico felt the effects of Irma and over 1 million islanders are without power. The infrastructure on the island is outdated and it is estimated it could take 2-4 months for some areas to have power again. There are reports of significant damage, but nothing compared to the other islands since the hurricane thankfully did not make a direct landfall. However, the social impact of this storm on the island is expected to be huge due to the impoverished conditions of many.

Short term forecast.

at201711_sat.jpg

Hurricane Irma remains an EXTREME cat 5 storm with winds of up to 175 mph or 280 kmh. The storm is thankfully expected to weaken as it starts to interact with the mountainous regions of the Dominican Republic. However, the storm is expected to grow by over 10% in the next few days leading to the impacts being felt over a larger area

The storm is currently situated about 100 miles above the dominican republic so impacts there shouldn't be that extreme, however the storm surge and rain is still expected to be extremely strong and landslides are likely, residents should still be extremely careful and wait for the storm to pass.

The storm is currently predicted to make a catastrophic impact on the lower islands of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Damage and destruction is expected to be absolutely catastrophic with storm surges higher than 20 FEET expected. These numbers are quasi unprecedented in the area and puts many of the residents of these low lying islands in mortal danger. The storm is expected to reach these islands by this evening/night.

Hurricane Irma has also broken the record for the highest amount of time where winds of 185 mph have been recorded at 33 hours. Breaking Super Typhoon Haiyan's record of 24 hours.

Long term forecast

at201711_ensmodel.gif

The forecast remains excruciatingly unpredictable, in any case the storm is likely to pass quite near to cuba  around saturday night. It is expected to weaken quite a bit when it approaches the island. The northwards turn is still an unknown however all models are indicating it should pass extremely close to southern florida if not over it. The forecast will remain uncertain until a one or 2 days before impact. Landfall or not, residents of the area should expect hurricane conditions around sunday morning.

The storm is not expect to stay long over land and would then head towards the coast of georgia and south carolina, residents of that area should start taking extreme precautions as the storm surge estimates if this remains a cat 3 storm are terrifying, with worst case scenario Katrina level storm surge possible around savannah, or charleston if it makes a direct hit. START PREPARING NOW.

THIS IS CRUNCH TIME IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA!!!! GET READY! TOMMOROW IS TOO LATE!

IF YOU ARE IN EVACUATION ZONE YOU SHOULD GO NOW!!! IF THE MIAMI AREA STARTS GETTING EVACUATION ORDERS IT WILL BE GRIDLOCK!

STAY SAFE YALL, I AM SO WORRIED

:omg:

If you are in the areas that are currently affected please update us regularly! I am sure everyone wants to know if you and your close ones are safe :kara:

I am tagging people who are involved or who have shown interest in this storm, if you don't want to be tagged anymore you can send me a PM. Also if you know anyone in the area you can ask me to tag them .I just want the most possible people who are in the involved area to get the info they need. Sometimes info can be a bit confusing and I am also multisourcing this stuff so that it is as broad as possible. I feel so hopeless and useless when a catastrophe of this maginitude is occuring, I am on the other side of the world but I still want to help and I feel like writing these updates is the least I can do....

My heart aches for everyone involved....

No worries about hurricane Katia concerning, be careful not to panic and start spreading fake info, it only makes people be afraid :ohno:

Sorry for being blunt I just don't want people to start worrying :spin:

Everyone please stay safe and evacuate if you can. From these new projections it doesn't look like I'm in the path anymore but a lot of my family is. Thoughts and prayers with everyone

My parents will be evacuating tonight. They are eating dinner now and going to bed now so they can drive all night. They have a place rented for a few days in the Atlanta area, which won't be unaffected, obviously, but it will be much better than south Florida.

Just finished helping my neighbor put up his window shutters. Gonna take a break and work on mine. The neighborhood is staying so we're gonna work together to get through this storm.
