She's local. Half of Europe doesn't know her or still thinks she's doing country. :hor:  I think South America too. :oprah:

Taylor is big in Spain. Her name doesn't resonate within +30 adults like Lady Gaga's or Beyoncé's, but among her teenagers and young adults, she's huge, bigger than anyone else by MILES.

This question is specially aimed at non-American members.

I live in a small country in Europe, so my understanding of Taylor Swift's popularity might not be the most accurate.

Yes, she is breaking records and selling millions. No doubt. But please, enlight me, how big is she, truly? Do people actually talk about Taylor Swift around the world? Or is she just another pop star with hit singles playing on the radio?

Where I live, Taylor Swift was basically unknown untill "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", the first song from her that started playing on the radio. Before that, nothing. Then came 1989, and her singles started playing everyday. Still, she was never more than an American act getting some radio airplay. Her name holds no power around here. People might know the song from listening to her on the radio, but they could never tell you who Taylor Swift is.

Even now with "Look What You Made Me Do", although she's breaking records, she's still pretty small compared with other artists who have been flopping for years around here but who people still talk about and remember (for example, Lady Gaga). In fact, I still haven't heard the song on the radio. The video's VEVO record wasn't really news here (unlike Adele, who made headlines everywhere for "Hello").

Being in this forum, where all we talk about is pop, it's easy to assume that the whole world is about Taylor Swift right now. But in the real world, is she that big? Fellow European members, who is Taylor Swift in your country? Is she in Miley Cyrus-level (who was successful generated some headlines around the world, even in my small country) or in Selena Gomez-level (who generates no headlines at all but still plays on the radio everyday)? I'm not even asking if she's a Lady Gaga, because that is a whole other level of success and impact.

So, once and for all: is Taylor Swift a global phenomenon? Or is she just the most successful American artist? It's clear that she has a huge, tremendous fanbase in the USA, big enough to give her the amount of success she experiences. I read in some forums how she's the most famous pop star in the world, but is she? No shade (and I mean it, no shade), but Americans often have no idea of how big some people really are outside their borders (which is understandable, since it's such a powerful nation and pop culture was basically born there).

I hope I'm not too confusing and you understand what I'm trying to ask here. Again, no shade to fellow Americans and no shade to Taylor Swift.

The exact same thing here in Spain. Like some people may know her... But if TS came here in concert I doubt she'll sold out, Adele or even Gaga with Joanne have had more impact and they are waay more popular. People know taylor for being the ''never ever ever'' girl but her level of popularity is lower that Selena Gomez

lol what spain do you live in? She's not big here :toofunny:

Of course people Now Shake It off and Never getting back together, but she's not HUGE. She's known for being an american singer and that's it... Only pop music stans really know bout her, Ariana Grande is bigger here for example.

Normal people here don't know about the snake drama or anything.

The most poular international singers here would be Beyonce, Adele, Rihanna or even Gaga.

All that I can say is that she's not popular in my country. :lana: She might be more popular in Western Europe though.

I've heard about her 7 years ago on the internet, and one of my classmates heard about her too and said she was pretty but I think her first top 40 hit here was I Don't Wanna Live Forever this year.

She is nowhere popularity-wise or general impact near to Gaga, Madonna, Britney, Beyonce, Rihanna or even Kesha or Adele in my country. :lolly:

I know that I have no idea about your life/location/culture, but I seriously doubt that Taylor isn't a big deal where you are if all those mainstream artists you listed are popular in your country, Taylor swift is probs just as big, if not bigger.

My parents live in Canada and even they wouldn't be able to tell you much about Taylor swift. Gaga on the other hand they know exactly who she is and what she does.

Totally true. Taylor is just in a Selena level of popularity here imo. I think Katy Perry is also amongst the popular american singers here as well.

Spoiler

Adele is British tho:poot:

Generally known among younger people, best known for her signature hits Shake It Off and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. Heard her a few times on the radio, the younger GP loosely follows her, but she's still far from being the most famous American female pop star here.

Taylor is very big in Spain among teens and young adults. +30 year olds don't know her. She started to be known with Red and became huge with 1989 (Shake it off and Blank space I think they didn't peak high, but spent a lot ot months on the radio). LWYMMD was the second most popular video in youtube only behind that McGregor vs Mayweather fight. Still Katy Perry is the most famous popstar here overall, Lady Gaga is known for TF-BTW, although Applause and Perfect Illusion have had some airplay, I've never heard Million Reasons here, while I've heard The cure a little more than PI

I think that title belongs to Beyoncé, if not Gaga, if not Madonna, if not Katy, if not Rihanna, if not Britney, if not Cher, if not etc.

What spain do you live in? x2

She's not huge... John Wayne was the #1 most popular video in Spain and no one knows the song:toofunny:

People know Shake It Off and Never Getting Back Together were hits but that's it.

Katy Perry is not the most famous popstar! I would say it's Beyoncé, but Katy is popular too tho
