Vergil 2,296
It doesn't to me. But I think Applause deserved #1 on Billboard and WW at least 2 whole months.
Bam 1,695
Gaga is not just a Pop star, she's a singer singer. Two different things. The beauty of her is, she could leave pop music and still be relevant because of her talent alone. That's why I stan her hard.
Whispering 18,865
All she needs is one or two moderate hits per album to keep up her profile and touring power. She has that. After a while, you don't even need that. You can become a decent album seller with a steady fanbase and still do well. Gaga has more money than she will ever need. It's all just icing on the cake at this point!

Applause would've probably gone #1 on the BB100 IF it had been released at a good time. Roar really screwed up Applause' chances.

Perfect illusion peaked at #15 with almost no promotion and little radio play but Joanne still debuted at #1 with higher sales than KP riding off Prism and CTTR which debuted at #4. Bradley 59,059
I enjoy her music regardless of its chart position or commercial performance but the commercial performance of her singles determine whether or not she will perform the songs in the future. I mean sure ScheiBe and Bloody Mary are performed at the Joanne World Tour but good commercial performance increases the chances of the song being included in future setlists. DeanWinchester 41,390
Because hits will carry her discography much further than when she doesn't have them (anymore). This is undeniable fact. Take Rihanna for example. Yes, she chased quick little singles but more than a decade of hits and now the industry retroactively respects her, magnify her influence and impact, forget or turn a blind eye to her weak albums before, and she is an undeniable radio darling no matter how much (or in Love on the Brain's case, how little) she tries. Am I saying this is the only way to go? No. But having consistent hits does help build your legacy. Madonna and MJ didn't rise to superstardom and transcended decades without a string of hits. Having hits isn't mutually exclusive from "music not the bling" philosophy. Having hits doesn't mean she has to sacrifice her integrity just like her wanting acclaim doesn't mean she has to avoid having hits by all means necessary. NecroManny 183
I get where a lot of are coming from. But i don't know. Why are we categorizing Gaga as just a pop star. She is just so much more than that. And so diverse. She can play jazz, metal , and avant garde, etc etc. i don't know. Im not trying to fight with anyone. It's just my opinion. I keep thinking back to when Gaga said this about Iron Maiden and fans "I guess what I'm trying to say is the devotion of the fans moving in unison, pumping their fists, watching the show, when I see that, I see the paradigm for my future and the relationship I want to have with my fans. Iron Maiden never had a hit song, and they tour stadiums around the world, and their fans live, breathe and die for Maiden, and that is my dream. That is my dream." Does any one get what I mean? REALITY 76,511
If I'm being completely honest, I think it's because we subconsciously link ourselves to Gaga, so when she starts doing bad (or if she's doing great) we start comparing to other artists and stuff and we talk about "Hey, is this song a hit?? Is it?? It will chart on the Billboard Top 10?? How about Top 20??" I completely understand where people are saying, "It's because she's a pop star, and in order for her to stay relevant, she needs to have hits," which is completely true. However, I'm sorry, but I just feel like it's something more than that. I agree with @Alolan Raichu, I largely feel like it's like bragging rights when she does well. Again, I'm not denying the fact that as a singer, you need hits to stay relevant, but I mean, come on. How many times have we dragged people like Katy Perry (especially with this era) for not having great success on the charts. Yeah, I know some people are joking about it, but I'd argue that the vast majority of people aren't. It's because whenever we see someone who we love and adore do well, we get cockier and we brag, and I'm not necessarily saying that we're doing that intentionally, but, we're doing it regardless. C1trus 4,341
You can't blame some fans because it was the first time they experienced their fave flopping down the pit (compared to her previous eras of course) ι'м ρυℓℓιηg үσυя sтяιηgs

RochestrMonstr 3,215
Gaga has been more than just a pop star for years now. Maybe smash hits were important in the beginning, but as long as she can still pull out a few moderate hits (which she has this era), I don't see why it matters. Maybe if she was just some pop star trying to fit in with what's trendy and radio airplay, hits would be more of a focal point for her and her team. But based on the sound of Joanne and the lack of promotion for The Cure, Gaga doesn't seem to care all that much about hits. So why should I? Most of my favorite songs by her weren't hits anyway. (Venus, Joanne, Bloody Mary, Diamond Heart, MANiCURE, Dance in the Dark, Gypsy, Heavy Metal Lover...I could go on and on).
