Sorcerer 12,469
I actually agree with the points made by this article. I mean its just crazy that her most stripped -down album doesn't have enough acoustic segments in the show. The show is disjointed in a sense that the songs do not translate well to each other. That was my issue with the show since it started. I understand that he likes Gaga when her vocals are the first foot forward. HOWEVER, he didn't acclaim the effort of dancing, Gaga's vocals even in fast-paced dance music, the production design, and the passion of Gaga. And for God's sake, Gaga isn't at odds with two personalities in this show. If he wanted Gaga to be more intimate, he should've attended the Dive Bar Tour. This is a show dedicated to Joanne, dedicated to her fans, and is an exhibition of who Lady Gaga was and is. Joanne is both a soft rock and dance-pop album. Gaga doesn't have to dwell with one genre just to satisfy this reviewer's needs. I hope other reviewers will have a better understanding of who Lady Gaga is before they watch a show. And I hope Joanne World Tour will receive acclaim, with just one negative reaction from this biased hater.
Stan Is My Name 453
Jfc, he has a hate boner for Gaga. He made some few loosely connected points and calls that journalism? There's one thing to point out flaws but here its borderline slander lol. Haroon is coming to kill me D:
Ronk 14,761
They sent a known hater all the way across the country to report what was without question going to be a negative article about Gaga. If they wanted an objective review, they would have sent someone else. Tabloid journalism, even if it is the NYT. NYT knows that hate and negativity sells, and they're not above using it. I live outside the space time continuum.
venusxillusion 184
Who cares about this review from this old ugly loser. The JWT is getting rave reviews from monsters and casual fans alike, no amount of reviews can change the success it's had.

And she has always excelled at both and striking a balance. This wrtiter clearly hasn't been to one of her shows before if he thinks this is something new. I agree. And I hope he has the same kind of comments when Beyonce includes "Crazy in Love" with the dancing and spectacle in her Lemonade tour or when other artists do the same. They have to get their negativity out early to influence as many people as possible. People form their opinions based on the first things they read about something. By the time positive reviews come out, people have already made up their mind that Gaga is trash. Because something's printed in the NYT, people believe it. People who wonder why so many people are against Gaga need to look no further than the haters who spread their negative messages early. I live outside the space time continuum. Katie14 4,828
She performed it on acoustic guitar, eventually joining two of her bandmates, also playing guitar, for a maudlin, Eagles-like effect that punctured the sharp vulnerability with which she opened. Its strange he used the word maudlin. Gaga said her grandmother told her not to be too maudlin when creating the album.

NYT and probably other major publications tend to send their critics to opening night. Hopefully they let someone more objective review her NY shows... The show has critical acclaim in Canada (even with a journalist who wasn't that fond of her, enjoyed the show) and yet the moment she comes to the U.S. The OGH come out to bash her tour. So sad. I wonder if casual readers genuinely believe these kind of reviews of biased, crass, and disjointed journalism. Imagine wanting Gaga to strip back everything that makes her a musical titan and then call her pseudo performance art. Girl bye. thisthisthis

Him wanting Gaga to drop the theatre and the dance is SO 2011. The choreos are a huge part of her legacy and why she's so iconic.
Glamourpuss 29,062
That journalist needs to put the thesaurus down. The amount of unnecessary adjectives... However, I did happen to find myself agreeing with the majority of what he said.

Unfortunately, the damage has already been done. Haters who are journalists will stop at nothing to take Gaga down. A few years ago someone who gave a negative review of a Gaga concert was found not to have even attended the concert. He just made up all the bad things he said. But the bad review was in print, so some people were swayed against Gaga. I live outside the space time continuum.
EGOT2027 10,890
As someone who was at the show last night, I can't help but agree with the overall point. (However, his writing style is unnecessarily arrogant.) I've always been one to say that's Gaga is Gaga because she constantly transforms throughout eras, but the transitions were very uneasy. TEOG stood out for the vocals and for the emotion. Bad Romance stood out for the incredible dancing, energy, and incredible staging. However, a lot of the other stuff -- while great -- was constantly jumping back and forth between raw emotion, crazy performance art, disco music, and country. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I felt like at times I was watching two entirely different artists -- a pop music goddess and an up-and-coming country star. The most striking moment was when the dancers came out on stage with an entire minute left of TEOG so that the literal second she finished the song, Born This Way could start, without any transition at all.
