Eurovision is a contest for European countries. Australia in Eurovision = Australia is European.

Yeah but that doesn't mean anything. They included Australia to benefit both the country/continent and the show. They're not going to rename it Euro And Australiavision... it's just for practical reasons

Doesn't make sense to me. Why not Canada in Eurovision, then? It's way more progressive than Australia.

How can Australia be 'progressive' when it doesn't even have gay marriage? :rip:

You're mixing the thread's topic with Eurovision, I doubt you're in position to judge which country is progressive and which one isn't

besides if I were a Trump supporter I wouldn't be questioning anybody else's progressiveness

how is UK in there? They voted for a Brexit. Not very progressive at all

I know literally no young people over here that are in any way racist. I guess that must play some role too, besides the politics

no long history of chattle slavery or civil war and global imperialism. very good canada,  :sis:

the cultural rifts dont seem anywhere near as severe as the US

wiki statistics on demographics look like its pretty homogeneous in canada aside from the 2 you mentioned. mostly people of european descent and dont have to deal with a mexico type of nation on their borders where immigrants flood in from.

from the wiki stats it seems the biggest minority in canad is chinese at like 5 percent.

I get that immigration can have an impact on criminality and average wages, but how does it affect

"basic human rights, income disparity, housing affordability, over-all well being, health, social programs"

As far as I know Latinos have only contributed to those things by voting for the party that's socially and economically progressive.. The only thing that might be higher is 'violence against minorities', simply because there's more of the minority..

Besides, the immigrant share of the total population of Canada, Sweden, Australia and Switzerland is higher than in the US..

The majority of Australians just want the government to legalise it and move on already.

Do you feel him sir?

your link is talking about immigration within the last 20 years, i'm not talking about immigration. i'm talking about places that have people who are different in some way(belief, culture, looks) and they arent always immigrants, in fact they are most likely not immigrants which is why the divisions can run so deep. its multicultural places that have a lot of friction between factions and as i mentioned, poor economies which a lot conflict comes from. when you have a dominant culture along with a bunch of differing cultures, the economic situation will (in my view of course) manifest the social well being. the dominant culture(culture isnt even the proper term here. its just about differences looks, beliefs, ) will exploit the lesser peoples in a country. the more economic instability the more anxious a society becomes and the more vulnerable they are to combative ideologies that pick a scapegoat. every society is stratified in a certain way and the more stress is put on a society (war, economic recession) the more rigid the stratification and vulnerable the people will be to giving into fears and feeling like discrimination can be justified in a way.

a rich economy can afford to give citizens what they need and the citizenry feel comfortable enough to focus on progressive ideas, a poor economy or an embattled country creates anxiety for a government and the society it governs which makes it more likely to become strict/authoritarian and to placate the people, identify an enemy.

The US is an anomaly in all of this with its young history and its unique creation and geographic location. we've been bringing in so many differing cultures and been involved in so many wars and atrocities. weve always been anything but homogeneous, and anything but peaceful. like i said, economics plays a huge role and homogeneous societies are just less likely to resort to policies that disadvantage citizens in an unjust way.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

I don't think Latinos and African-American people really are that different culturally from European Americans, at least not in the way Muslims and Asians have a different culture from European Americans. Besides, many of the countries listed were just as segregated - the Netherlands has always been a multicultural society, though not multi-ethnic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillarisation). Besides, countries like Poland (which didn't suffer from a recession in 2008, amazing economic growth and mono-cultural) are even more conservative/xenophobic than the US.
