Bebe Rexha: I Was Told I Couldn't Sing Hip Hop Cause I'm a White Girl

Wow she overcame so much hardship to become a successful attractive white woman.

Oh please.

You'd be upset too if your hard work was put down simply because of race. She never claimed she was oppressed or anything of such kind, simply, she explained that her hard work was disregarded for her race.

Oooooh wow she's got a nasty attitude. I don't even think she is wrong but she is way too early in her career to be talking with such a diva-attitude on a radio show.

Your album peaked at #51, you shouldn't be sarcastically thanking people for putting you in the headlines. She needs to find her humble again and figure out where her career is headed because of now she will always just be the girl who is featured or the girl who wrote the song.

Eminem faced a similar challenge but Dr. Dre believed in him.

She's a talented girl. People are overlooking her because she's a white, pretty girl. But she's written a handful of hit songs for big artists, and can sing better than most of them.

Watch out for her guys, she's legit got mad talent.

But she's wasting it. We know that she's full of talent. I fell in love with her music something like two days before her actual debut, the I Don't Wanna Grow Up EP, was released. I thought she was going to be next big thing. I thought she was on the verge of saving pop music, just like Gaga did at the end of the 2000's.

But then she released No Broken Hearts.

And I Got You.

And that All Your Fault EP.

To me, Bebe Rexha is the perfect example of how some music labels f*** off great talent to try to get more money.

Bebe used to make great music that flopped. Now, because of her label, she makes bad music that flops anyway.

Good job bitches.

Oh boo frikken hoo. Sorry you're not allowed to capitalize on a culture you don't even understand. I get where she's coming but hip hop started because it was a creative outlet for black and latinos Who were being oppressed. So it's a little annoying when white people wanna join the party when they were the ones who were being discriminatory in the first place :madge:

Not saying white people cant be a part of hip hop but know it's history and know your place and your privelege.

No wonder Riri has all these hits. She doesn't give a **** who Writes, Produces, Sings the song as long as her name is attached to it. Sorry, but this is embarrassing.

You pretty much nailed it. She keeps valiantly trying to 'sell' that she's hip-hop and that it took her a decade to really 'find' herself musically. However, she spent years in the pop-rock genre and seemingly did a total 180 when signed to a new label. Her pop-rock work was more authentic and felt more representative of her own sound. She went from releasing 'Gone' to releasing 'No Broken Hearts' and I don't really buy that it was a personal choice.

I just wanna know which person told her that the music she writes is "Hip Hop". Even Monster is Pop Rap at most.

That's where the irony truly lies. It's clear she tries to incorporate hip hop elements and portray a hip hop image, but dressing up like something doesn't mean you're that something...

True. I like her songs, but for me she is just in the music industry for the money and not for the actual music

Good on her for speaking out on this. This kind of stuff flies under the radar and as soon as you start to bring it up, people try and silence you and assume the worst of you. Even when you lay out the facts in front of them, they don't want to hear it. Even when it sounds like exactly the same kind of oppression that non-whites have gone through, just in reverse, they put their hands over their ears and chant "la la la la" like a child. Because when you realise that everyone gets discriminated against for something in this world, you realise you can't claim unique struggle anymore. And certain people just can't handle that. White women are caught up in just as much racism and sexism as any black woman but for some reason, the white side gets silenced. A white woman complaining is seen as a whiner, a spoiled bitch, a pampered princess. Which is pretty racist when you think about it. But when a black woman complains, people get all serious and listen to her. I don't know what planet people are living on when they don't see this happening. I've been silenced for so many reasons throughout my life, to the point where I'm used to it. But being silenced for being white was thankfully something that I never had to go through. But last year, it happened and it was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I never used to be this confrontational when it comes to race issues but I've just had enough of being told to shut up, being made to feel stupid when I bring up good points, seeing genuine problems getting dismissed. I don't know what it is but I always feel like I get looked at differently by everyone in life. I've been treated badly and/or weird by a lot of people for no reason. And I'm just not standing for it anymore. It's got to the point where I wonder if every non-white person is looking at me as a white woman and assumes countless stereotypes about me being ignorant, spoiled, bitchy, a sl*t, etc. I never used to wonder this at all but these close-minded views are coming to the fore so much nowadays that I seriously ponder this stuff and it angers me that people are assuming this stuff of me.

lmfao Gagadaily finding this more important than race issues that affect black people

You can simultaneously focus on 2 issues, you know. It's funny, whenever you bring up any trouble that a certain group faces, all people want to do is ask: "But don't you know how bad this group has it?" Stop playing oppression olympics and realise that everyone has problems in life and they're all of importance.

How is this a nasty attitude? She's sticking up for herself. She's not being a diva, she's telling the truth and there's no better time for saying that in life than at the beginning of your career. I don't think she was being sarcastic about the headlines, it sounded like a genuine sassy comeback. She's admitting that she's not selling much so she's grateful for the exposure. Would you say all this about a man? Because it seems like confident women are labelled all too often as having bad attitudes for my liking.

She doesn't rap per se and she's not slow enough for RnB so exactly how would you categorise her? The true definition of hip hop is all over the place, so I wouldn't handle the term too strictly. I call a lot of music in the style of Bebe's to be "urbanised pop" because it doesn't fit too much into any urban genre and has huge pop elements.

And then gets referred to as a jar of crying mayonnaise. Like what the heck is that, lol.

I agree with most of your points, I really don't think white women deal with AS MUCH racism as black women do, though. At least not in America.
