PunkTheFunk 124,471
@ everyone in this thread trying to deny Madonna's legacy: You can hate her, you don't have to like her music, you can think she's a copy cat, you can think she can't sing, FINE. But to deny that she is an icon, a trailblazer, a cultural INSTITUTION, a woman without which none of your female pop stars (NONE!) would even exist, a woman whose impact on culture has its own Wikipedia page for crying out loud -- takes some next level delusion and I suggest you take an hour to reflect on your life and the choices you've made
Lanius 1,055
Madonna vs Gaga is so 2013 OT: Madonna longevity is so impressive. Pretty sure none of her peers can tour Arenas right now. Rebel heart also sold a million WW. I will say that Madonna has never really had a huge era ( Like Music box, Thriller, The Bodyguard etc etc) she's like Rihanna, consistent but never the biggest seller. StrawberryBlond 14,888
I think her legacy is undeniable, the inspiration that she caused is stratospheric and she has some really amazing songs out there that have definitely stood the test of time. However... I think, especially in a community such as GGD, where there is a large gay community, that they over-estimate how much her work has actually been remembered. The gay community have always loved Madonna and still do, so many of them know her discography inside out. But understand the majority of people don't. Look, I was born in 1989, so Madonna was only 6 years into her career when I was born. So, it's not like a grew up in ignorance about her, I was informed of her existence by the late 90's. But I can tell you that there were actually very, very few of her songs that I actually knew. In 2012, I listened to all her albums, including soundtracks, to really educate myself and let me tell you, there was very little stuff that I was already familiar with. But up until then, there were very few songs I knew of from her. Not counting the ones on which I was educated about by various sources, the only ones I remember always knowing of were: Like A Virgin, Like A Prayer, Material Girl, Papa Don't Preach, Beautiful Stranger, Music, American Life, Hollywood, Hung Up, Sorry, Get Together, Jump, 4 Minutes and Give It 2 Me. As you can see, I was familiar with her stuff from 2000 onwards only because I was growing up in that time. If I was born later, probably not. Most of her stuff I can remember were her biggest hits from her early career because such songs were mentioned or used as a soundtrack throughout my years, so it was easy to come across them. But honestly, so many of them were introduced to me in passing - Crazy For You was from 13 Going On 30 (didn't know who was singing it), I heard about Janky Panky when I stumbled on a YouTube cover of it, I only heard about La Isla Bonita when I had to look up the answer to a "Guess That Lyric" game, I only heard of Express Yourself when Gaga was accused of copying it. And I actually didn't even know at the time that it was her singing when Beautiful Stranger was a hit. Much as I can recall the aesthetics of Ray of Light, I can't remember any of the songs from it at the actual time of release. Which is odd as it's now my favourite album from her. I had absolutely no recollection of any of her stuff from Erotica or Bedtime Stories or any of her soundtracks except Hanky Panky and the songs from Evita, which were covers anyway. To assume that everyone knows all of her work is a huge over-estimation, even for someone born in the 80's. Remember that someone with a big discography and so many years in the game is going to struggle to get the public to remember absolutely everything. The way some people on here talk about Rebel Heart, you'd think it was a popular album of Ray of Light proportions. The reality is that hardly anyone in the world knows any of the songs from that album.
Sam Dey 1,847
it saddens me that young gays these days won't even know how much of a gay icon madonna was at the time no one knew about HIV or gay people (I mean it was stigmatised) she was the one bringing those topics to the public (especially with her truth or dare docu)

I agree with you, but her signature songs are very known worldwide, especially Holiday, La isla bonita and Like a prayer. It's the same thing for most artists, for example I can barely name 5 Michael Jackson songs (his biggest hits), and he was the biggest pop icon in the world. FadMadonsterStan 578
As much as I love Madonna she’s not really relevant amongst younger people (except my self of course) when I was in high school not many people new who madonna was or if they did they thought she was desperate and old, but she will be remembered in the books/charts and older people how legendary she is, but her antics she doing today don’t really work anymore or cause shock value as it did 30 years ago it is seen as desperate and pathetic Don't go for second best, baby Put your love to the test
