It's getting to a point where I'm afraid of purchasing clothing with certain patterns that appear cultural, in fear that someone might get mad at me.

No matter what you do, someone will criticize you. It's true for this generation and the generations before us.

You just have to learn to do you.

But cultural appropriation IS a thing... this example from kesha is just :madge: though

I hate those words, "cultural appropriation". I think it's something invented by someone who really had nothing to do all day long and wanted to create some drama

Come on think about it, why is that a problem?? If she or anyone else wanna record a video with some particular culture influences where is the problem? It's not like the culture of a country is owned by the people living in that country.

If you believe cultural appropriation  is a thing than you should be pissed every time there's a pizza or a dish of pasta in a video cuz that's Italian culture appropriation.

And, in a world where most people believe tge multicultural societies are better, you cannot be pisses if someone uses some themes of your culture for his/her art. It just doesn't go along with the idea of an open and evolving society.

This shows the hypocrisy of the world we're living in. I really can't stand those fake issues which random people come up with.

It's called globalization and it's not a problem. Please google it and learn something. Also share this with your friends who think the same.

You're welcome :hug:

It really is a problem, despite what you may think.

Why is that someone like Miles Cyrus is praised for wearing dreadlocks, yet young black girls are literally being kicked out of their schools for having them?

Then there's the issue of media sources exploring the use of Native American headdresses for financial gain. They have so much meaning for Native Americans, yet it's seemingly okay for them to be simply worn as a fashion statement and nothing more?

Globalization is not a problem, I welcome it with open arms. Nor is cultural appreciation, where people adopt from other cultures as a form of appreciation by understanding the significance of these things. The issue at heart is appropriation and exploitation - when people, generally white individuals, steal from another culture and:

a) fail to show a true understanding of the meaning of it;

b) exploit it to make money;

c) demean people of colour for doing the exact same.

Here's a list of a few articles that you may find interesting, they explain my points in a slightly more coherent way:

Haven't bothered to go into reading the replies, but I wonder if someone brought up the time Beyonce wore Indian clothing in that video she did with Coldplay for Hymn for the Weekend, and I'm a huge Bey stan, but girl...she's not east indian/asian.

Cultural appropriation police just feel like drive-by SJW BS on the internet, when we've got LGBT rights being threatened, police getting away with murdering black people and other foolery. Like congrats, you got Tumblr on your side for a hot minute, but it's not stopping black people from being killed by police.

Also, we live in America, the home of capitalism, where if something can be turned into a profit people will wear it/sell it. Like I'm surprised kilts aren't being used as some retro/plaid 90s look (I have a feeling it will be eventually, just give it time or at least another decade).
