United calls police on gay dad

The airline falsely accused them of molesting their son and then merely apologized.

United is apologizing publicly to gay dads and their son, and this time the airline looks homophobic in its customer service. 

The apology, the fathers tell The Advocate, isn’t fixing the damage done by United’s accusation against the couple. “Those statements are generically manufactured and only in place to protect United,” said Henry Amador-Batten.

A flight attendant spotted Amador-Batten holding his sleeping 5-year-old son on the plane and reported him to authorities. The United crew member accused him of placing his hand and arm “too close to the child’s genitals.”

When it came time to leave the flight, Amador-Batten was detained and questioned for over an hour. Amador-Batten and his husband, Joel, adopted their son and are foster parents to another boy, making any report a serious risk to finalizing adoption of their second son. 

“As soon as the news broke we emailed the case workers involved so that they'd hear it from us first,” said Amador-Batten.

Amador-Batten hasn’t kept quiet about the incident, although he says United asked him to. 

“We got a call the day after the accusation,” recalls Amador-Batten, who said the representative asked “if we wouldn’t mind keeping this low key. She even mentioned all the bad press they'd been having and that she liked her job and wanted to keep it. That was literally a part our our ‘apology call.’”

Instead the couple has appeared in local news and spoken to CNN, which is expected to air an interview with him on Monday. United issued a statement to CNN.

"In this instance, the crew believed it was appropriate to ask authorities to meet the plane and interview the customer," the statement to CNN read. "After speaking with the customer, authorities determined that no further action was necessary. Our customers should always be treated with the utmost respect and we have followed up with our customer to apologize for the misunderstanding."

Amador-Batten and his family were on their way back to North Carolina after a trip to Puerto Rico to see his father, who was ill and then died.

Most flight attendant s are gay (male ones). I know that is a generalization but I have also flown many times in the last couple of years so its my personal view. If it looked weird to a flight attendant (even a female one would have asked a gay one before reporting it). I might be on the side of United. We can't be afraid to report thing just because we would be labeled as homophobic or something else, if it seems wrong to us. The truth will come out eventually, but this is the safety of a child we are talking about.

How many moms are detained and spoken to for over an hour for holding their children?  or straight dads?

I don't know.  How many? That's not United's fault. At that point it's the fault of the authorities how long they are detained. A friend of my mom's had a breathable cover over her stroller so the snow would get in. It was made for that reason and someone who thought thought it was plastic called the authorities. She had a real big hassle but she proved it was meant for that. You can't be afraid to report something that doesn't look right. Even if it turns out to be nothing.

THIS! 

That flight attendent had no fucking clue he was his son! She was only looking out for the child! Nothing about what happened indicates that discrimination was made because the couple are gay. She saw a 5 year old with a man who looks too old to be his father. 

Any person who appears to be touching a child's genitals would have been reported. And nothing but the attendant's worry of the child's safety made her report what she saw, and now she's gonna get fired for it. It was a safety measure and no one was hurt. 

But of course y'all are gonna see the headline and start jumping on the hate bandwagon.

Did you know, it's possible for people to report things that "look wrong" because of prejudices they have?

There is really only two ways to hold a five year old on your lap while they are sleeping either towards you or away from you. I have a five year old niece so i'm talking from experience. If she is sleeping toward you there is really no way you are touching the genital area. But if the child is sleeping away from you then yes some parent grab the child by the thigh or even hold them by the crotch so they won't fall, but that usual only when they are babies or toddlers. At 5 years old your hand shouldn't be anywhere near your kids crotch or so close that a complete stranger could mistake it for fondling. Look at how big that kid is in the picture. The parent could have easily wrapped his arm around him without being near his crotch. If that's something that looks weird, it should be reported and then let the authorities figure out guilt or not. It's not the job of the person reporting it to figure out if someone is guilty. If it looks wrong report it.

Again it was a flight attendant who reported it. Someone who probably works day in and day out with Gay co-workers and on top of it she or he was reporting it on behalf of the airline. I mean it just wasn't some random prejudice person who reported it.
