Because some people have transformed that history into culture and heritage, and conveniently forgotten the part where major parts of this were formed around traditions such as racism, slavery, and bigotry Like, people can tell me being southern is about grilling food and being hospitable all they want, theres nothing about that that necessitates statues of confederate soldiers, confederate flags, and other monuments. Monuments are by definition built in commemoration (a positive thing) for events, in memorium of people, etc. Artifacts are neutral remnants of historical or natural events. Germany is a great example of what to do to make sure the past is not repeated but still keeps the historical aspect of it present. The Confederacy belongs in museums, not in our city centers.
