Just don't think going against labels entirely is the answer, I'd rather we change the association with labels, and opting out of labels completely doesn't accomplish that. Just look at Raven Symone. I respect your opinion I'm just of the opinion that i just want to BE, without any label (not just sexuality). Like i just wanna live with no boundaries. John Slayne 4,154
lemme give his album a listen Spoiler jk, I won't, but good for him I guess? I don't find the gay label wrong but ultimately I do agree we would be better off without labels, it's just not realistic because discrimination will always exist and so will the need to put everything in boxes

Also for the OP gay is a valid label, if you're saying that you may as well go ahead and tell people who've had the label since the days where you could be arrested and murdered for it and wear it with pride. And while you're at it tell the black community they don't have to label themselves as black anymore even though for hundreds of years they've been attacked and wear that label with pride. Just like gay people. I appreciate the sentiment here, but I am not sure you really understand the history of the homosexual. There have not been "gay" people for hundreds of years. Sex between men was not considered in any way queer or deviant as recently as the first half of the twentieth century. What might be called "gay" now was explained through the logic of the invert (i.e. a differently gendered soul in the wrong body). Men who performed "masculine" roles in sex with men faced no stigma. It's not until the gay rights movement gains traction with Mattachine in the 50s and Stonewall in the 60s that there becomes a collective sense that there are "gay" people and gay liberation solidified that term in popular discourse. Anyway, the history of "gay" is very complicated. It's actually a very new concept. Some people don't feel it applies to them despite that it has become a common identity label. All these things are relative.

If you haven't, I would really encourage you to read Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality Vol. 1 and historical works like Gay New York and Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities to understand the history of how the idea of "gay" as an identity category was shaped. I am consistently disheartened by how entrenched in identity politics young LGBTQ people are and how ahistorical their perspective can be. Anyway, I don't mean to presume what you know or have read, but if you are unfamiliar you might really enjoy reading up on the historical construction of sexual identity. It helps when dealing with those that insist these terms are inflexible.

YeehawKylie 7,817
Well, his sexuality is none of anyone's business.m first of all. But if he's going to discuss it I find "I don't need to label my sexuality" an easy out. I totally agree that forcing yourself into a label is stupid, but mind you, we often don't put ourselves in labels. The society around us does that. I like men, I am a man. If someone asked me what my sexual orientis is I'd either say none of your business or a I have a boyfriend. That being said, to others I'm gay. I don't get to "not be labeled". And I'm fairly lucky, there are several minorities who get grouped into labels with far worse stereotypes. Does a black man get to "not label" himself by his race? Not really, as people see him as a black man and prejudge him just looking at him. Not trying to start anything, He can answer how he chooses. However, I don't find this admirable (not saying I find it inadmirable either). If he likes men and women, just say it. If he feels genderfluid, just say it. If not, then just say "that's personal and I choose not to answer". My main point is that not many choose labels, a lot of people are labeled by others. There is choice in the issue, but not much. At the end of the day, I would think most people would love to not be labeled based off of race, sex, sexual orientation, size, etc...but we don't always have that choice.
