GPs are resorting to using pen and paper, according to newspaper the Blackpool Gazette, and phone and IT systems have been shut down. It's not as simple as that, updating the systems of organizations such as hospital and banks is nearly impossible. The majority of the systems in hospitals and banks grew reliant very quickly on programs that were no longer maintained and do not work on newer systems, meaning that if they were to update they would need to commission new multi million dollar programs that work with the data from the old ones and the risk of failure and time it would take to implement such a thing would be far too time consuming and costly. These types of organisations cannot afford even a couple minutes downtime in a 24/7 window, let alone the weeks of instability caused by a massive major upgrade. Its usually better for them to patch individual vulnerabilites they come across into their older versions. Some hospital systems in the UK even use Windows 95. Banks commonly use Windows XP. This attack seems to be a ransomware attack and with any luck it will be done by rookie hackers and will be reversed almost instantly, it looked to only affect host PCs so data was unlikely to be stolen. A lot of the time these types of attacks unintentionally end up in hospital systems, they're designed to bounce around as many devices as they can until they hit a profitable target, not necessarily intending to hit a hospital.
